With #ActivityPub, could you have no character limit for the size of posts but then have them for replies? Posts (like articles) should go viral, replies should make for a great conversation and not deter from further engagement.
I'm working on something loosely related - a personal view of the Fediverse (called #Emissary) that feels a lot more like an old school RSS reader than Mastodon, Facebook, Xitter, and the rest.
It lets me curate the slice of Fediverse posts that I want to see and blocks out a lot of other noise.
I love it. Others may not. That's cool. Any population of N people will have > N+1 mutually exclusive needs.
I think that's the best we're going to get in any Democracy.
I want to build a new piece of #fediverse server software that I'd call #platypus. The idea being that it would try to constantly incorporate the best ideas from other projects.
The initial version would have a feed that looks like #mastodon etc but when you clicked on an item, you'd see what looks like #lemmy or #kbin, with replies ranked via up/down arrows. No communities or magazines, just hashtags.
does this make sense? what am I not thinking about? wouldn't it be awesome? how do I start?
@2du@naynay same here. I like kbin's interface but the communities are just not strong enough to support the kind of discussion reddit can. I unfortunately started going back to Reddit for my niche interests but have unsubbed from popular/default subs.
@naynay Probably very niche, but french lemmy has a nice community now, even if it's a small one. (It's Jlai.lu)
Crafting lemmy does not look as good I'm afraid, but you can @ their communities from here, which is nice.
almost forgot about this cool guide to kbin > although the last update was about three months ago (quite some things have changed on kbin since then), it is still a well written introduction, covering the basics en detail - recommended :bun_love_rev: #kbin#kbinmeta
Implemented menu icons in idkbin 1.3.6! They make the UI feel a lot more polished imo.
I also made these a standalone userstyle if you just want those.
Looks like the #threadiverse has been widely used by the #Lemmy and #Kbin communities for years, but now it's slowly being co-opted (including by #Meta staff) to refer to the #federation of #Threads.
I predict a complete takeover of the #hashtag, and term in general, before the end of 2024.
Trying out #Lemmy and #Kbin and my first impressions is that both are aggravating. Each has some positive aspects. But, besides both feeling very quiet, each one has UI aspects that drive me up the wall. I have followed the same 13 or so communities in each and I'll give it a go. But I think it might be a better tool for a distinct community rather than to replicate the #Reddit experience.
