Eventually, warmed air will rise and leave the building through another tower or opening, aided by the pressure within the building." #persian #AC #windcatcher #bâdgir

I think I might have a bad influence on my coworkers, quite some time ago I started calling every women I didn't remember the name of Tante (aunt) and every man I don't remember the name of Onkel (uncle) and somehow it's spread, and I caught my manager telling me "I'll have to send it over to the auntie" :p

Indians do this, too, because (IIRC) (as well as many Indic languages, like ) has specific names for mother's/father's brother/sister, so they call any older man or woman by the English "auntie/uncle."

I've always liked that.

I have to go back: I forgot to include the most famous woman in the history of : Shirin (d. 628), the wife of Shah Khusraw II. She favored "miaphysite" Christians over the dyophysite Christians who were more numerous in Persia, and in later (Muslim) literature she became a symbol of love and romance, most famously in Ganjavi's poem "Khusraw and Shirin."

Peris¹ and Div² are creatures from ancient mythology.
The first are fairy-like beings, so delicate and beautiful that it was said they fed on good perfumes — not food.
The other ones are huge, hairy orc-like creatures, with long fangs and snakes as beard.

Many legends narrate of Div kidnapping a Peri, imprisoning it in a tiny cage on the top of a tree. Other Peris, then, carried sweet scents to the poor one until it has enough strengths to fly away.

His birth itself was a stroke of destiny.

His parents married in the face of opposition from a personage no less than the greatest Safavid King of Iran, Shah Abbas. He was their first child, and when he was born his parents' joy knew no bounds.

The astrologers, however, played spoilsport. The child was promised for great things, they said, but for that it was essential to follow a stipulation: The child couldn't meet his father till he was twelve years old.

Galling as it might have been, 👇🏻

the caveat was still followed down to the letter. But when finally the time came for the child to meet his sire, the latter passed away after a brief illness.

So the child succeeded to his father's throne without ever having met his father.

Notoriously hot city rediscovers ancient technique to help its residents stay cool

Story by Rick Kazmer
November 13, 2023

“Thousand-year-old #Persian technology could help officials in #SevilleSpain, to tackle extreme #overheating, if only modern-day politics can stay out of the way.

“City leaders are bracing for temperatures that are expected to pass 120 degrees Fahrenheit in the coming years. In response, they are working on a project in the city’s Isla de la Cartuja that uses a '#bioclimatic'effort to cool down, according to #UrbanInnovativeActions.

“This is not an air-conditioning system like the one you may have in your home,'Juan Luis López, an engineer and the project’s supervisor, told Bloomberg Green. 'We use natural techniques and materials to reduce temperatures.”

“The project, called #CartujaQanat, could cost around $5 million or more, funded in part by the European Union. Some of the work is already complete, with the goal of cooling the air down for the busy city.

“A Bloomberg report describes architecture that fosters breezes, fresh #GreenSpaces, and underground #aqueducts that borrow from ancient civilizations. The water flow can cool the nearby environment using air, water, and #SolarPower.

“The latter tech is fascinating, yet simple. Water is brought into underground tanks at night, where it cools. During the day, solar-powered pumps send the water through pipes, which travel by fans, creating cooler air. 'Small openings in the floor and steps allow the refreshing current to seep into the square,'all per a Bloomberg description.

“And while progress has been made, Bloomberg reports that a change in Spanish political leadership has placed the work in 'limbo.'When Bloomberg visited the site in July, the news agency reported that it was not open to the public. There was overgrown vegetation 'and piles of dried leaves.'Delayed contract bids, inflation, and other roadblocks are slowing progress as well.

“However, #Seville’s new mayor, José Luis Sanz, told Bloomberg that he supports the project, noting '[that the] impacts of #ClimateChange are more than obvious.'

“As planet overheating continues to set records, clean ways to cool populated places without adding to #AirPollution are vital. This project in Seville, which borrows from the work of ancient Persians, could be a model for other cities.

'The goal is to test the technology, to learn from it, and fine-tune it so we can replicate what works elsewhere,'López told Bloomberg.”

Today in Labor History August 19, 1953: The U.S. CIA and British MI6 help Iranian royalist troops overthrow the liberal-leaning Premier Mohammed Mossadegh. As Prime Minister, he introduced reforms such as social security, land reforms and higher taxes including on rental income. He also nationalized the nation’s petroleum industry, which the Anglo-Persian Oil Company (APOC/AIOC), later known as British Petroleum (BP) could not tolerate. As a result, they installed the brutal, pro-Western Shah Mohammed Pahlevi. The brutality of his regime, the torture, secret police, disappearances and mass imprisonment of opponents, set the stage for the Islamic Revolution in 1979, and over 40 years of US aggression against Iran.
