The last time I tried a steak in January 2020, I got eleven days in before I got COVID.

Almost four years later, I'm finally feeling up for trying again, aiming to hit at least a mile every day between US Thanksgiving and New Year's Day 🤞

Running today was – in parts – pure torture. Very cold to begin with (below -10 degrees Celsius) and a relentless wind stinging all the time. When I came home my fingers were numb despite the thicker gloves I wear under such circumstances, my face was reddened and stung like hell from the frosty wind. But I had a good 130 minutes of Patrick Rothfuss‘s THE NAME OF THE WIND, so nothing of the above mattered that much.

For nearly four years, I've used Merrell Moab Vent Light Trail as my primary runners; because they were the only shoe that didn't need to be broken in. After running 15,000 km or so since 2020 it's time for real shoes.

I'll be going to one of the Running Rooms (https://runningroom.com) here in Ottawa, and am looking for suggestions for something with a wide toebox, good cushioning & support, and works well on wet pavement, and doesn't break the bank.

Recommendations?

Success today on many fronts! Eighty seconds of plank, 25 pushups, started with my and I (slowly) completed my first half-marathon around since the injury side-lined me. Now, if I'm honest, the last five or so kilometres were a very real struggle - that annoying little voice to just stop that many runners have heard got very loud, but I managed to push it aside. Very sore, but pleased.

Today is both the autumn eqinox and time for this:
https://www.skogsmaran.se/
Those passing my window on the finishing 200m are still running (at 12.15)
The less fit will come walking later …
We have had some serious rain this morning, to the extent that even the magpies sat under roof on the patio, so those passing are not only tired but also very wet.

Me? I stay inside preparing meatloaf …

Two weeks of at least a mile a day and I will need to break the streak because I got sick. My toddler sneezing in my face didn’t help my case.

Wow! I‘m keeping the long distance up for the moment: 28.x kms/day. This way I should reach 7,000 kms until the end of the week. So my goal of running 8,000 kms this year is slowly but surely inching closer.

First pain-free run in 3 weeks. Ran slightly faster (but not too much) to celebrate. Ironically this was one of those runs I really didn’t want to do at first…

Happy that my legs are back, hopefully next week I can resume “tempo” runs in preparation for my next HM trial (which won’t be happening this year, I want to space those properly now).

Incidentally also my first sub-zero run of the season. Still wearing shorts but I put on long sleeves and gloves.

Got my twenty pushups in during my warmup/stretching, then ventured out for a cool morning in for a 1km walk and 10KM RUN! Now, I know the path to getting back to my pervious volume is going to take time, but I'm seeing progress, so I'm pretty happy.

What can I expect when I return to after recovering from ? It's my first time and I have no idea what comes next or how much of a struggle it might be.

I'm beginning to feel normal again and hoping to start up this weekend. I know I'll have lost fitness and will have to take it slowly for a time.

Advice?

Last Christmas in Iceland

Unfortunately we will not be working for a few months at least in Iceland - our small house is being lent to a family who have had to move because of volcanic activity and it really is not very big! But if you get the chance, it is a wonderful place to be.

And yes, a wetuit is not necessary if you choose the right pool.

Swimming in a warm(ish) pond about 20k outside of the capital.

I don‘t actually know what I did to my legs, but I was faster today than yesterday. Maybe I should devour large chunks of chocolate each evening from now on… Just kidding, I already do that. Temperatures were rising fast, so I kept to the shadows whenever possible. That way was okay to run, but it‘s really hot for mid September.

Last night, I forgot to activate my alarm… So I woke up at around 5am. Then I took my time, but it felt good to go outside (almost 10 C), and I‘ll never get how long I endured the old wheels on my rower, now that I have the comparison. Have a great weekend, y‘all!

Am in Dunkeld on the first leg of my in which I hope to explore parts of South Australia that I've never been to. And visit some wineries along the way of course. And in the middle too!

Photo shows where one of tomorrow's Peaks And Trails 20km event mountains should be, if it wasn't for all the cloud... 😂

All things being relative, this is absolutely flying for me. 😃 One of those runs where you feel great from the outset and feel even stronger as your body warms up.

Friday fun run. I'm registered for my 7th (I think it's up to 7) Marine Corps Marathon in October. I have thoughts.

1- This year I'll share training notes and my run playlist
2- Think I'm done with Strava after that race

Suunto's been good to me. But what apps do y'all use?

I really need to start tracking the kilometres I put on my running shoes. Had some knee troubles after recent runs and now with new shoes they’re gone.

I noticed HealthFit has a field to track shoes and you can set a default 👍

I guess I’ll know when the time comes and it’ll vary by vendor and model but how many kilometres do you keep your shoes for fellow runners?

I did it 🥳🎉!

First 10k and my PB so far. My net time was 01:02:12, i.e. a pace of 6'13"/km
My best training time so far has been 6'25"/km in 9 km, so I'm satisfied with my performance!

People cheering while passing by is a great motivational boost.

I was looking something up in my 2023 spreadsheet and thought I'd share some interesting bits; the average temperature of my runs last year was 3°C, and wore pants 51 days of the year (for running). Did I mention I'm a giant nerd that tracks everything? 🤣
