Hearbreaking read by a Jewish journalist at #TheGuardian who has faced untenable amounts of #Antisemitic remarks from their collegues.
I'm sharing this (as left-leaning Jew who also reads the The Guardian) to highlight the reality of antisemitism on the left.
Also ---as anyone who reads me regularly knows, I am a frequent critic of the state of Israel and the ways it is conducting its war in Gaza. I say this to make it clear that calling out the reality that antisemitism is widespread among many leftist institutions, doesn't mean that I believe the criticism of #Israel is off-limits. But, I do believe that it is essential to use the same standard to call out #Hamas for its violations of #InternationalLaw, as well as to not attack Jewish or Muslim people (in Israel/Palestine or elsewhere) for who they are.
#theguardian / The ghost of apartheid has come back to haunt Israel and give hope to Palestinians
The parallel between the treatment of Palestinians by Israel and the apartheid regime in South Africa: a systematic campaign of oppression, dispossession, and violence against marginalized groups, language used to justify these systems and the ways in which they have been perpetuated over time. An international action is needed to address these issues and prevent further human rights abuses.
[…] Even as a teenage Zionist of the left in South Africa – before the illusions of that identity collapsed under the weight of their absurdity and I found my way into the ANC – my anti-apartheid inclinations made me especially uncomfortable that Israel was the apartheid regime’s closest ally. Many of us were appalled in 1976 when Israel hosted South African prime minister John Vorster, an avowed Nazi imprisoned during the second world war for his work in a paramilitary sabotage organisation linked to Hitler’s abwehr, his military-intelligence service. Even more so, later, when it turned out that Israel was negotiating arms deals with South Africa, which violated the UN arms embargo, and even cooperated on nuclear-weapons development.

Remember, according to a real life test case, in English and European law your human rights don't include attending monarchist parades dressed as a zombie, no matter what bizarre fancy dress the monarchists are wearing.
And now the Home Office is directly intimidating potential protestors by sending them threats about new legislation: "the government are using a statutory instrument to bring draconian measures that the House of Lords threw out of the bill back from the dead, once again evading scrutiny and accountability. It’s worrying to see the police handed so many new powers to restrict protest, especially before a major national event. When the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act came into force, the police repeatedly misused them".

Gymnastics Ireland fails to apologise despite row over medal snub for black girl
Video of the event in March 2022 shows a judge handing out participation medals to a line of young gymnasts, but ignoring the only black girl. A photographer, coach and other officials look on without intervening, with an audience of hundreds in the stands.
Can you imagine how this poor girl felt? She is going to remember this demeaning experience her whole life.
"Why is the US far right finding its savior in Spanish dictator Francisco Franco?" by Jason Wilson (#TheGuardian)
"Some US far-right figures have made renewed attempts to rehabilitate the 20th century Spanish dictator Gen Francisco Franco in recent months, praising him as an avatar of religious authoritarianism, and praising his actions during and after the Spanish civil war as a model for confronting the left in the US."
"The critics of this flurry of neo-Francoism say that the real target of this revisionism is domestic attitudes to US democracy."
"For Faber, parts of the the American right are captured by “the dream of order, where social order is more important than democracy, and democracy is a threat to social order”."
SNP Europe spokesman Alyn Smith said his party was now “the only major party committed to rejoining the EU”.
He said :
With Starmer, Sunak and Davey – the three bungling Brexiteers of UK politics – all throwing in the towel and ruling out any return to Europe, it’s clear independence is Scotland’s only route back to EU prosperity and the only escape from the long-term damage of Brexit.

‘Israelis, go back to Europe’? Some on the left need to rethink their slogans
by #Jo-AnnMort
"A majority of Israel’s #Jews today are not descended from #Europe, but rather from #Arab nations. To expect them to leave #Israel is unprecedented, unrealistic and wrong."
[I don't agree with her opinion on "river to the sea", but I do agree on "go back to Europe".]

This Grauniad story forgets Kim Campbell, Canadian prime minister for 132 days in 1993, between when Brian Mulroney resigned because the entire country hated him and the election where the party was reduced from 156 seats to two.
