🔐 Vendor lock-in hurts UK govt ability to negotiate spending | The Register
「 "UK government's current approach to cloud adoption and management across its departments faces several challenges" which combined result "in risk concentration and vendor lock-in that inhibit UK government's negotiating power over the cloud vendors." 」
UK govt office admits ability to negotiate billions in cloud spending curbed by vendor lock-in
It’s one of the points I’ve been making since the beginning of enterprise cloud services. It’s not to say necessarily that a cloud service is bad, but you have no control (and often no easy way out) if prices jump (remember Microsoft changing their ...continues
The youth exodus from #TikTok is already underway. Gen Z is abandoning it in droves, leaving their parents (Millennials) the largest demographic remaining.
As usual, children seek to hang out in places their parent's generation are not. TikTok lost that a while ago.
♻️ Why single vendor is the new proprietary
➥ OpenSource.net
「 The second misconception is that single-vendor Open Source is, somehow, the reasonable and business-conscious way to do Open Source. You should be on board if you want Open Source to win against proprietary software. But those companies are still doing what is, essentially, proprietary software 」
240 million functioning PCs/laptops will be chucked into landfills.
Because #Microsoft has managed to convince consumers that computers cannot exist without #Windows.
Current situation to passkeys have smell of #vendorlockin as by their nature the #passkeys can not be shared easily across platforms, and sometimes across devices on same "platform" (here platform is Windows, iOS/MacOS and Android). It is very easy to notice that Linux never mentioned in context of passkeys.
PS: here is a relevant article: https://www.linuxadictos.com/en/passkeys-thanks-but-no-thanks-yet.html
A student can't afford to pay the $8 per month for #Obsidian sync, so builds a #FOSS alternative. Then posts to HN and says "I probably violate ToS, so will take down the repo if asked".
Then the Obsidian CEO replies. Explains they aren't VC-funded and the $8 bucks subscription keeps the light on. Applauds the work of the student, points to other open ways that content sync can be handled and gives advice "if you rename, there's no ToS problem". 👍
More considerations about how to break out of #vendorlockin for an application that is built on the wrong #webframework and has grown organically. It needs #refactoring and it needs to be lifted to a new tech stack.
I’m writing on my #blog about how I see the challenges ahead of me. Comments are much appreciated 😊
"Stop ISPs enforcing use of their own router for VoIP phone lines
With the switch off of PSTN telephone lines in 2025, many ISPs have started to provide VoIP phone lines with their internet supplies. This is great, however, use of these VoIP phone systems is often restricted to only work when used via the ISPs provider router/modem.
The government should enforce ISPs to provide VoIP information so a user, if they wish, can source their own VoIP to analog telephone adaptor allowing them to use a custom third-party router if they desire. Failure to do this creates a vendor lock-in problem, and means switching providers can be immensely difficult and ultimately lead to people sticking with one provider in the fear they will lose their telephone number if they do switch."
