Want to break free from OneNote? help Joplin test the experience

Joplin team-member, Pedro, is giving OneNote import finishing touches and to test it he needs real life data. So, if you can provide real life data for its testing, you'd make it the experience of moving to Joplin so much easier for thousands users breaking free from OneNote

Just a question - what's the best alternative? What I'm looking for is good stylus support. Any help is appreciated!

Notesnook looks very promising: https://notesnook.com/

  • open source clients, server, clipper, etc.
  • strong encryption
  • self-hosted sync servers are on the to-do list!
  • their sync server is about half the yearly cost of Obsidian.md's

Doesn't do nested notebooks or folders yet, which is sort of necessary for me, but they're on the to-do list. I'm also partial to Markdown format, which is a supported export format.

I feel dirty because I’m using since we have a family subscription. But I just want to rid myself of all this Microsoft stuff. Not sure what to migrate to - maybe?

I want to be able to edit on either my mobile (iOS) or my desktop ()

@kepano New user of here (since Jan. 2nd, 2024). Really impressed so far, though I'll keep using for most use cases.

  • A way to hide/filter out image files in the Explorer sidebar

I think the OneNote feature I miss the most from things like Obsidian.md and Joplin is how easy it was to make tables in OneNote. Markup languages (including Markdown) are sort of terrible at tables.

I think tools just don't like me.

I usually us to extract text from images. And usually, it works alright.

With the image it seems to work fine as well, but one line of text is missing. And it is not even the first or last line.
It's not that the quality of the image is bad (at that line) or that the content is very different.
It's neither the shortest nor the longest line. Doesn't contain special characters.

It's just missing 🤷🏻‍♂️

(Sadly, I can't share the image)

What do you use for OCR? Preferable Windows and not a Webservice?

This application is the bane of my existence. Not only does it have terrible formatting abilities, it is unreliable, slow and EXTREMELY bloated. I have lost too much data to this monstrosity, but I have no alternative at work.

This is nice to see..

A student can't afford to pay the $8 per month for sync, so builds a alternative. Then posts to HN and says "I probably violate ToS, so will take down the repo if asked".

Then the Obsidian CEO replies. Explains they aren't VC-funded and the $8 bucks subscription keeps the light on. Applauds the work of the student, points to other open ways that content sync can be handled and gives advice "if you rename, there's no ToS problem". 👍

I recently migrated all my notes to Obsidian from OneNote, and I couldn't be happier. 📓🎉

I wrote about the process to explain why I think it's a good idea, and to hopefully assist anyone else who might like to do the same thing. Even figuring it out for myself, it took me less than a day, so armed with this blog post, I bet you can do it faster. 🙂

I've seen the hype and warned the users of long-term lock-in effects. Then OneNote failed and people lost (parts of) their data.

I've seen the hype and it happened again.

Now, I see the hype. (At least the file format is an open one.)

🤷

If you want to spare yourself some effort, think of starting with a solution with no lock-in: https://karl-voit.at/orgmode/

I was evangelical about Evernote about ten years ago.

There was that whole thing where, back then at least, they wouldn't or couldn't encrypt data at rest.

Reluctantly moved to Google Keep and OneNote, slowly adapted, and still to this day no reason to move away.

FYI for the few remaining people who pay for Evernote: it’s time to love to Bear or Notion or OneNote (which is excellent and free) or even Apple Notes. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36609641

chris_sirrs,

@film_girl I used to be such an advocate for in my research, it’s a shame they’ve gone downhill so quickly. The trouble I’ve found is nothing quite replicates Evernote’s ease, flexibility and power cross-platform. is great but stubbornly remains wedded to Mac; I don’t really like the section-page format of and have had big sync issues in the past. I’ve long gone past the point of thinking an ‘everything bucket
is a good idea.
