Today in Writing History May 27, 1884: Writer Max Brod was born. He is most famous as Franz Kafka’s friend and biographer. Kafka had asked him to burn his unpublished manuscripts. Instead, he famously published them. However, Brod was also an accomplished writer himself, well-known in Germany. He also mentored other writers. His endorsement of Juroslav Hasek’s hilarious anti-war satire, The Good Soldier Svejk, was crucial to its success. He was also a Zionist disciple of Martin Buber. And in 1939, he and his wife fled to Palestine to escape the Nazis, who burned his books in the book burning of 1933.

The first 30 prisoners arrived at the Auschwitz concentration camp on 20th May 1940 from the Sachsenhausen camp. By the time the camp was liberated in January 1945 of the 1.3 million people sent to Auschwitz, 1.1 million were murdered. The real issue is that over the last 40-50 years, the media & others have conflated #antisemitism and criticism of the State of #Israel while they have turned a blind eye to those who are antisemites and yet supposedly pro-Israel, including Christian Nationalists who bad-mouth Jews, use slurs, and only see Israel in some eschatological vision of Christian Triumphalism.
Beginning on 10th May 1933, Nazi-dominated student groups carried out public burnings of books they claimed were “un-German.” The book burnings took place in 34 university towns and cities. Works of prominent Jewish, liberal, and leftist writers ended up in the bonfires.
