A soaring mast in the mountains of southern Bulgaria has made the EU's poorest country the home of the bloc's highest flagpole, filling some with pride and drawing scorn from others.

Nationalism and populism are on the rise in the Balkan nation, where many remain strongly Russophile despite Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

An immense 1110m2 flag, meant to symbolise Bulgaria's territory of 111000km2, was hoisted up the record-breaking 111m pole last week.

I've recently realized that gamebooks might have been a rare 90s phenomenon in Bulgaria only. While I was growing up, those kept my imagination and passion for writing.

However, based on my discussions, gamebooks don't seem to have been that popular globally.

Thus, my question. Have you ever seen or played gamebooks?

Big brands such Lidl, Coca-Cola and L'Oréal must stop advertising on pro-Kremlin media outlets in the Balkans, European Parliament lawmakers told the companies.

Global companies get heat for financing pro-Kremlin media in and with their ad budgets.

"Many media organizations that promote pro-Kremlin disinformation often use advertising bought by reputable companies to strengthen their credibility,"

I've never before, in a single day, heard so many people say "thank you" to each other on the streets of Sofia. It's as if suddenly everyone found out about the magic of giving way, holding the door, or generally being nice.

This does not apply to Sofia's politicians and bicycle riders of course. They are all bastards.
