Planted the cabbages and put marigolds and some thumbelina zinnias in 3 of the raised beds. The 4th is melons so vines on the surface need all the space.

Even I am impressed by what I made for Pete to take to his Christmas party with his "hamster" friends! Wish I could have gone just so I could eat some hahaha!
I finally grew a delicious #cabbage! I think this is a Danish ballhead, from West Coast Seeds. It’s been ready for at least a month but it held perfectly in the ground and it was so sweet!
Factors that helped this orb succeed where the first couple I harvested didn’t (I think):
• I harvested the first two (both bad, different reasons) at least six weeks ago, when the weather was warmer. This cabbage got one light frost and many chilly nights.
• I let the chickens get to it at the right size for them to be effective bug control. They’ll just devour small brassicas complete, but this cabbage bed was netted until they were starting to head up. Then I pulled the netting and the chickens started scratching the bed up getting all the bugs out. They ate all the guard leaves off this cabbage, but they didn’t really hurt the part the humans want. And there were only a few weird little wormy dudes living in the base of this cabbage, hell yeah!
• Even the chickens can’t save me from weird wormy dudes and slug eggs if the bed is overcrowded. Yes, the seedlings look so small. No, future me, you cannot under any circumstances put more than four of them in a bed.
• I wish I’d written, you know, anything down this year. But now I have adhd meds, and for the first time in my life, I’m feeling hopeful that next year really will be different. #Gardening#WinterGarden#PNWGardening
Edit: my alt text is a fucking masterpiece, y’all
Today's adventure will be making kimchi and figuring out what to do with my bok choy and shishito peppers.
I'm thinking of adding some of the Bok Choy to the kimchi... I've only got normal green cabbage, not Napa... so it's already bastardized-- not worried about that.
What should I do with the rest of the Bok Choy, though? My husband and I bought a bunch of heads, and since I forgot to cook him some to take to work this week, I have to figure out what to do with it. I don't particularly want to just stir fry it, but I suppose I could.
As for the shishitos... I'm not a big fan, myself... that's my husband. I gotta figure out something I can do that will hold til Friday at the very least.
FUCK. I also have a butternut squash and two acorn squash I need to figure out what to do with.
