It's hard to overstate the importance that Sesame Street played in my life.

My parents had VHS tapes shipped internationally, and my parents got not only an American TV, but an American VCR, in France, in 1979 so I could watch it.

When I was a small child, Sesame Street was one of my favorite shows. I enjoyed the animation and complexity, not only the word lessons but life lessons too.

And it absolutely had an impact on how I saw the world, and probably why NYC feels more like home than anywhere else in the world to me.

I was too old for Sesame Street when Elmo became prominent, but I saw the cultural shift it created. I didn't like Elmo or the direction the show was taking.

I'm glad other people are talking about it, because Sesame Street plays such a huge rule in my childhood.

"I still read Paddington when I need to believe, as Michael Bond does, that the world's miracles are more powerful than its chaos," says English children's fiction author Katherine Rundell in this extract from "Why You Should Read Children's Books, Even Though You are so Old and Wise." Do you ever read or reread kids' books as an adult? Tell us in the comments about your childhood favorites.

Which American city is best for raising free children?

@citylife

With 90s-and-earlier style independence. Could it be Salt Lake City? Inspired by this:

"Utah Free Range Parenting Law [...] says that letting your kids play outside, walk to school, wait briefly in the car (under some circumstances) or come home with a latchkey is not neglect unless something else seriously bad is going on."

When I was 9 yrs old I went to this event at a park with music and games. A local radio station was there, offering prizes to people. If you could throw X number of frisbees through this hula hoop you could choose a record from their stash. I won.

It was my first experience choosing my own music. I saw Billy Squier’s “Emotion in Motion.” It was brightly colored so I took it home and put it on our record player. It was my gateway to a lifetime passion of music.

A random memory just came into my head... The first we had in the house when I was a kid. The Amstrad 464.

Yes kids, not 64GB of memory but 64k. What was yours?

A quotation from Aldiss, Brian:

«
When childhood dies, its corpses are called adults and they enter society, one of the politer names of hell. That is why we dread children, even if we love them. They show us the state of our decay.

Fixing the global childhood obesity epidemic begins with making healthy choices the easier choices – and that requires new laws and policies (theconversation.com)

Obese children outnumber underweight ones globally, and ‘social determinants’ in kids’ lived environments play a fundamental role. Obesity in kids can lead to a lifetime of poor health.

My house is always cracking at night. When I was a child, my dad would tell me "don't worry my dear, it's the wood breathing. The house is relaxing".
I'm a grown-up now but, drifting away to its familiar wooden lullaby, I still wonder how many lives are sung that I don't know of.

No, I don't have a drop of Swiss blood (as far as I know) but yes I still enjoy and sing along with (parts of ) some classic yodel songs like 'Min vater isch en appezeller' and 'Jetzt wei mer eis jödele'-- long ago my mom got into Swiss yodel music via cowboy yodel music! She had a few favourite vinyl records when I was growing up (and yes, I can still yodel 😆 )

My fave memories was entering the Shoppers Drug Mart colouring contest every year from ages 7-11. I won 4 times in those years - heaps of chocolate prizes. I gave the chocolate prizes to my bros because I'm not a milk chocolates or sugary sweets lover. I just loved entering the colouring contests.

We didn't really celebrate Easter because it's not in our culture. Me & my brothers participated in Easter egg hunts at school & in community though & they were fun.

Awhile ago I posted a picture of my hubby as a little boy (he is in the back seat) with his Grandpa rowing a boat on a lake...It got me thinking and painting so I could give him a special Christmas gift this year! Almost done!

I wish right now that I had one of those what they called gogurt tubes. What they were for those who don't know is tubes ffilled with yogurt that you opened and ate like an icepop, except its yogurt and you squeeze it. Super fun. We had the coolest snacks as kids. Who wants to discuss kid snacks? ,

I was born and raised in a small, relatively unknown town in southern . Time seemed to pass very slowly there. Until high school, I had never even heard the word ‘gay.’
