Lookie at what I got! It's a guitar zither, or chord zither, or, if you're a time traveler or vampire, you might know it as a guitar-mandolin. Looks to be a beginner's instrument, but it's pretty well constructed all the same. Paid $40. I do NOT know how to play it, but that's never stopped me before...
Anniversary of the 1932 Kinder Scout mass trespass on Sunday 23 April so here's Commoners Choir with From Below. If you want more related folk songs then there's Manchester Rambler by Ewan MacColl, and the rearranged version by John Tams, and Trespassers by the Young'uns (on their album Tiny Notes on Bandcamp). And there's a short, song filled, documentary about the Kinder Scout trespass by the Young'uns with Boff Whalley on youtube. If you can't find links for any of these let me know and I'll post them.
For every footprint on the land,
For all the banners and the banned,
Should we keep to the landlord’s plans? Hell no!
‘Cos real change comes from below.
Hi, I am Stoney Case, and I have an irrational loathing for Cat Stevens’ music. Thank you for listening to my confession. #deeptalk#truestory#folk#music

For this week's #MusicWomenWednesday, check out this amazing sounding album 'Melt the Honey' that comes out Friday. The band is PACKS, aka Madeline Link.
These songs have such a cool, lo-fi feel- they reminds me of early Beck songs or maybe quieter Sonic Youth or Sebadoh songs, with Link's cool, unaffected voice and some great lyrics. It's folky and catchy as hell.
'Melt the Honey' comes out Jan 19 (Friday) and it's definitely a contender for my top favorites of this year. Listen/grab it here:
Always surprised when people say they got into the #GratefulDead through #folk or #bluegrass. It's like, what are you doing here, wholesome traditionalists? This is a drug band for vagrants.
The North House Folk School in Grand Marais is undergoing a $5 million campus expansion, part of a growth in traditional folk schools around the state as more people yearn for off-screen experiences working with their hands.
I'm extremely sad and angry at the felling at #SycamoreGap, and will probably do another thread on that, but would just like to take a moment to appreciate Simon Heywood's poem and how it ties into the #folk tradition of rage and protest
at the #brooklyn#folk fest, early '60s folkways recordist peter siegel in conversation with the great music scholar elijah wald, on concert (& studio) recording in the folk scene, playing a tantalizing excerpt of a forthcoming archival LP of fred mcdowell with the georgia sea island singers.
Beck released the masterpiece Mellow Gold 30 years ago today (March 1) in 1994. I was 14. It's still one of my favorite albums. Mellow Gold is actually Beck's third album, but the one most folks are familiar with because of Loser. TONS of great songs on this one. My favorite might be Beercan, which I know well because I used to cover it. 🤣🔥
I'm really excited! I've just purchased tickets to see Eddi Reader in concert at The Perth Concert Hall. The gig is on Sunday, April 21st, 2024. This will be the first time I've seen her perform.
A review, hopefully with photos, will follow shortly afterwards.
