Looking for recommendations on beginner-friendly #Linux distributions.
I don't need any novice help, this is for a friend who wants to move away from Windows.
They need the usual productivity software, web browser, mail, Word, Excel, etc. which will probably be easy to replace. I advised them to start working with #LibreOffice now, to see if they feel comfortable with it. They also need some more exotic software, but I'm confident it will work fine with Wine. We'll test that out soon.
They're also very privacy-sensitive, so I'm currently discounting #Ubuntu.
Those two months of taking a break from content creation on tiktok and Twitch kind of hurt my savings for my projects as I have a separate bank account for all this.
I would really appreciate new Twitch and Tiktok subscribers and I have some items for review that I purchased that I will give honest reviews to, but also tips/donations are always appreciated
Seeing people trying Linux got me wanting to install a new distro again.
So I pop out this old Microsoft Surface 3 I had that is sitting at the bottom of my drawer. Before this, I put ChromeOS Flex in it for my gf to use. But it has a plethora of performance problem and cannot be used to do anything beside browsing the web.
The new OS I'm installing is ZorinOS. First impression: it is really, really fast on such an antiquated machine.
Earlier this week benny was joined by Claus Wieser to talk about a bunch of stuff:

WezTerm https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/ surpasse tous les terminaux que j'ai pu tester jusqu'ici. Je suis passé de #urxvt à #alacritty (pour la fame et rust) puis à #kitty dernièrement pour le support des ligatures. Kitty était pénible pour plein de choses (assez lent pour certains trucs, un ssh mal géré, écrit en python, etc)
WezTerm est génial : support des ligatures, des images, rapide, configurable, doc top et compatible #linux#macos et même #windows !
In a new podcast, Linus(Tech) said that with the upcoming #Windows#AI bruhaha, a lot of users are going to move to #Chromebooks. But just today #Google announced that AI is coming on their #Chromebook line too. Maybe just a chatbot for now, but eventually, it'll be more integrated. The only option (for those who can't stand #Apple), is #Linux, on their existing, older PC. That's why distros running in low RAM are important.
Linux blind users, listen to this and let me know what you guess this actually is, and most importantly, what you think! I'm just gauging interest as this is still in its early infancy, and I was wondering if it was worth continuing. As you can infer, I'm already far enough to have a working yet incomplete prototype!
Current #HomeLab status: I‘m making progress very slowly. The server is assembled and up and running Proxmox 8. Yesterday I‘ve build a custom NixOS installiert that has my SSH key pre-loaded. That way I can boot a VM and set it up using nix-anywhere. Tonight I‘m planning to try this out the first time. #proxmox#NixOS#linux#SysAdmin
OK so I finally gave NixOS a shot and oh gosh it's a game changer. The thing NixOS solves is everything I hate about linux that I apparently mistakenly believed was "just how linux works".
I honestly did not know it was possible for a linux system to not suck as much as NixOS doesn't suck.
