It was three years ago today that I started the site. In the early days, it was all I could do to get a single person per week to visit the site. Today, we have almost 4,000 registered users and over 2,300 videos shared! 🙌
Thanks so much to everyone for the support, which 100% comes from community donations! Please continue to spread the word by sharing tilvids.com with others! 💙
@tilvids I have to admit when you started, I questioned your choice to not federate, but I'm happy that you did it for the good of the project.
It did nothing to stop others from following/commenting the channels from elsewhere but kept the local instance isolated from some of the more undesirable content from some other #peertube instances ... not a good look for these nascent services.
#GPN21 lounge sets are available on YouTube. All DJs will get the uncompressed recordings in the next days. I will upload my set to #peertube and pin it to my profile. For the next and maybe the upcoming years we might set up a peertube instance to publish the sets there. We have to look into the costs of running that thing. Maybe there is some one who can tell us something about the costs? @mirsal maybe you?
In a conversation with @nb about decentral identifiers (PID, DID, IPFS...) we wondered why libraries have not been engaged in this area no more. Hardly any mention of #bittorrent or #ipfs in #code4lib mailing lists, journal...
@nichtich I've made academic librarians use bittorrent (e.g. to transfer files between one computer to another over a slow network) but I admit there were very limited use cases. Downloading and archiving torrents would be useful but few libraries would be that brave. Distributing via bittorrent (or even #peertube) has limited benefits when you have unlimited egress for free from your university. Huge datasets à la #AcademicTorrents benefit from bittorrent clients but few have any (#Zenodo?).
What I find pretty odd about #Fediverse stuff is that I can reply to a #PeerTube video in #Mastodon but I can't reply on PeerTube using my Mastodon account.
For this week's #Linux and #OpenSource News video, we have @nextcloud Hub 5, a giant release that makes it the true alternative to Google or iCloud, we have more details from @system76 on their Cosmic desktop environment and a tiling revamp, plus some plans for GNOME Mobile, and a lot more!
