:shibashock:

A request and to all instance admins:

  2. Update your site.manifest file

This way, when your site is installed as (Progressive Web Apps), they don't look the same with the trademark logo; and other fediverse software like etc. ^_~

With all the work going into making PWAs work as well as native apps, why hasn't anyone fixed it so that icons in the dock get scaled to match the size of native icons? (The too-large icons are PWAs). The site owner can't resize them, or they'll show too small on Windows/iOS/Android.

What’s a good client on ? It almost seemed like I was able to log into my instance on but it kept just pushing me back after the consent release. The works really, really well though and is actually better looking vs .

We’re reaching an interesting stage of development. There are now two PWAs (= web apps) that provide a best-in-class experience to those service (IMO): @voyagerapp is a beautiful client, and https://phanpy.social is the prettiest client I've tried so far where push notifications just work, even on iOS. Pretty cool! What enables this? Technically, CORS enabled APIs, and improvements on web tech on mobile recently.

I recommend this frontend if your instance doesn't support watching another server's "Local timeline".

It might be a Sonoma thing, but I think Chrome has started using the maskable icons on macOS. 🤔 A colleague of mine installed @mattrbld on her laptop today and the icon was the same size as the others in her dock! Meanwhile, I’m stuck with the too-big one I’ve been bothered by for months now. 😅

In any case, that’s great, I’m all for more OS inclusion for .

You want people to get updates ? There's a thing called . You want people to have an icon to click to ? Just make a , you can even send push notifications these days.

It's better to make one great web app than make two shitty native apps.

I really wish there was a way for to open links in the default browser instead of the browser I used to install them with…

doesn't have PWA support (understandably), but one feature I love about native clients is that all the random links I click on get opened in a privacy respecting browser.

I still haven't found a native app that's as good as , so I'm sticking to and there and yeah… 😅

schizanon, to webdev

I've always wondered whether a #webDev could install multiple #ProgressiveWebApps on a single domain.

Turns out that is discouraged, and we are expected to create a different subdomain for every app we build.

Some basic improvements for Progressive Apps () support have landed in what will become Web () 46!
The application icon and names will now be fetched from the PWA manifest if available. It's a nice start. https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/epiphany/-/issues/931

schizanon, to ipfs

The #IPFS companion app is a desktop app that runs in the system tray and manages a locally running IPFS node. It provides a UI which seems to be web-based. It launches it's own browser (likely Electron) but you can also load it in any browser, where it presents as a #progressiveWebApp. This means you are installing a locally served #PWA! 🤯

appelgriebsch,

@schizanon I just discovered the extension firefoxpwa (https://github.com/filips123/PWAsForFirefox), tried it and quite like it. It's even better than usual support in browsers in that sense that it creates a custom profile for every app so that they can't share cookies and stuff....

I'm still kind of sad that the ability to schedule local notifications via a service-worker got removed from Chrome. 😢

It would've made privacy-respecting, offline-first PWAs so much better. 😅

An PWA or iOS app that can work with a credit card swiper with a custom backend payment service. Open source preferred but all options are open at this point.

“So far I don't think there's any restrictions on which websites can be added as an 'app' on macOS - which is pretty much how you'd want it, Users don't really care that the website hasn't added PWA support.”

This! 💯 👌 Especially the “Users don’t really care” part is spot on!

Some talk about here:

https://mastodon.social/@bendelarre/111126758524773053

I have mixed feelings about PWAs. They're the best way to get an app on a user's device right now (no app stores!) but the hoops you have to jump through...

Take the Periodic Background Sync API (https://developer.chrome.com/articles/periodic-background-sync/) which articles will have you believe is a way to keep the data fresh on your app ("fetch latest widgets every hour") as illustrated here:

https://web.dev/app-like-pwas/#background-app-refreshing (by @tomayac)

The problem is...
