Also in 1983, Lucasfilm (later Pixar) made the first high-resolution computer-generated image that was supposed to be near-photorealistic and "a single-frame movie".
#Retrocomputing
Peak Solaris: SparcStation 10 running Solaris 5.5.1, with Solaris OPENSTEP as window manager, and Wabi (Windows 3.1 environment) plus Macintosh Application Environment as applications.
Unfortunately the colours in Wabi and MAE are off, as I only have a cgsix...
when @radiofreelunch extremely generously offered to send me a "couple" old Newtons, i balked. i had an old MP2100 years ago, and it was tough to get software loaded on them, even with all the correct hardware
driving home an hour later, i thought: what the hell is wrong with me, i'm turning down a free newton?! 😅
a week later, this amazingly heavy bundle of Newtons and Newton peripherals arrived. thank you good sir :D

there is extensive battery leak/corrosion from the AA batteries on each of them, so they'll spend the next few months getting some TLC. hopefully most survive!
My Retro-Computer Journey - let's start with my Ohio Scientific Challenger 4P. I got this given to me by an older fellow who was getting rid of all his stuff. It had the MOS 6502 processor in it and I kept it for several years but really didn't do much with it. I wound up donating it to a computer museum in the end. Interesting machine for sure!
Probably a long shot but does anyone have links to a schematic for a totally TTL logic based 64 or 80 character display circuit ?
I'd like to build one and modify it so it could do monochrome graphics as well. Preferably for a Z80 based system.
#RetroComputing#VintageMac nerds! Any tips for what’s wrong with this dual processor G5? It did used to work, but stopped a couple of years ago.
Press the power button and the white light flashes on then off, a red light inside lights up then off, and the insides spin up then down straight away.
I’ve reseated everything, replaced the PSU, checked the white tab on the deflector…
#Retrocomputing enthusiasts, #chiptune fans, #MSDOS buffs -- I'm looking for a particular piece of software, and I'm hoping one of you remembers.
In maybe the 1992 to 1995 time frame, I had a DOS multi-format module player (at least #Amiga MODs and S3M files) that I'd like to find again. In my memory it was a player, not a tracker, but I'm not 100% certain it couldn't track. It had a gradient-colored bar for each channel, which was at least capable of being a cyan color.
One of the machine's I've been after for ever was the Apple IIc, probably after seeing it in use on a beach in the film 2010 the year we make contact by Arthur C Clarke.
Well, I managed to get one really cheap. It arrived today & it's in excellent condition.
It's an NTSC machine but with a modern PSU so it works in the UK. Also means the composite output is colour (PAL is mono).
"In many ways, Usenet is a warning about how social networks can go bad. All the same, problems we see today on social networks appeared first on Usenet."
So the LC I got working earlier this week? Its power supply wasn’t actually working, so I pilfered the one from the LCII. Will recapping this get it working as well? Or will I just make things worse? #RetroComputing :S
i don't think i've ever seen this documented anywhere, so here goes:
Myst was built with Apple Hypercard, using a ton of third-party extensions to pull off an extremely atmospheric first person experience.
what is less known is that because Myst is a hypercard stack, it is possible to load the game in black & white mode despite color being a stated system requirement. the result are scenes that have been dithered and posterized from 8-bit colour, down to 1-bit. they look almost like a silhouetted photograph of a georges seurat painting, eery and beautiful in their own way.
I could use some recommendations for connecting old computers/consoles to modern TVs/monitors. In other words, something that can take the output from the retro device (be it SCART, Composite, potentially RF) and convert it into HDMI.
Any ideas? There's a few things out there but (for instance) a lot of the SCART->HDMI won't do digital RGB, which is a must.
Needs to be off-the-shelf sadly, my electronics construction skills are…not great 😊
I don't know which of these components I blew up, and I don't really know how to test them without making things worse. So I'm thinking of just replacing them.
The MAX762CSA has been discontinued, so I'll either have to find new-old stock or a modern replacement.
I have no idea what the other IC is... It looks like it might have a 5 and a 6 printed on it (unless it's upside-down, in which case it's a 9 and a 5).
No schematic, so I'm flying blind. All help welcome!
