While many would agree that A-levels are too narrowly focussed, the move to a baccalaureate system without significant reform of the rest of the system would be a disaster;
and reforming the rest of a system currently in crisis & with a lack of goodwill from #Teachers sounds more like another swing of the wrecking ball rather than a real desire to improve the UK's #education
If you've been following either the reporting of the #PostOffice#Horizon inquiry, or it dramatisation on TV, you'll likely be surprised (as I was) that #RishiSunak seems to have awarded #Fujitsu another #publicsector contract, this time for the UK's emergency alert system (at £20m per year).
This is not just reward for failure this is rewarding people who were prepared to lie to put innocent postmasters in jail.
So, now #RishiSunak claims he cannot hand over #WhatsAp messages to the #CovidEnquiry because he's changed his phone... a line of argument already tried by #BorisJohnson & found lacking.
The key issue is the immediate response by #Tories in government at the time is to make accessing these messages more difficult; suggesting they already know they include damning evidence, but also that we know what we need to see
What do the right always say? Oh yes: 'the innocent have nothing to hide'!
As the 'junior' #Doctors prepare for another five day walk-out... I'm just going to say this again:
The Doctors have been forced into this position by a succession of #health secretaries who either on their own or being instructed by No.10 are playing hard-ball.
We've seen how #RishiSunak negotiates on the #EU#Horizon research programme... he's prepared to wreck the institution around which negotiations are taking place.
So more #Tory wrecking of the #NHS, not, NOT, 'militant doctors'!
🇬🇧 UK: UK PM Rishi Sunak thought government should ‘let people die’, Covid inquiry told in bombshell claim.
In one of the most explosive claims heard at the inquiry so far, the now prime minister, who was chancellor at the time, allegedly believed it was time to “just let people die and that’s okay” in the autumn of 2020.
Of course #RishiSunak is claiming he has brought down #inflation... but the actual Q. which he should be asked is: what exactly did he do to bring it down?
And of course the answer is sweet FA.... he's been too busy playing party politics to be attending to real issues.... and if he then claims its the BoE what done it, then the Q, is at what medium term cost...
ggrrrrrr [the sound of an Emeritus Professor of Political Economy grinding his teeth]
If you wanted a clear demonstration of how the#financialservice industry not only had different interests from other #business sectors, but also is indifferent to their practices & economic activities, the fact the #RishiSunak (ex-Goldman Sachs) is being criticised by firms (most loudly from the #automotive sector) on his UTurns (and partial UTurns) on #NetZero is a classic case... he's either clueless, or uncaring about the impact of continued regulatory instability on the 'real' economy!
"If Sunak cannot win the blue wall or the red wall then what exactly is the electoral attraction of Rishi Sunak? Tory MPs will be having these discussions between now and the next election."
While there is a general centre-left feeling to people's views on #economics of redistribution & the #politics of tax & spend... on #immigration there is a clear difference of opinion by age.
So if you wanted to understand how the declaratory politics of Johnson #Tories worked (given their dependence on older #voters, while trying to 'win' younger people to the party), here you have one simple element...
Where #RishiSunak has problems is reality has caught up with earlier #torylies! Oh dear..
Casting round for strategies to save hime from an electoral disaster, has #RishiSunak decided that defending shipping in the gulf by attacking the #Houthis is his #fFalklands?
Certainly, there is the advantage that this is a conflict few are clear about, and the protagonists are unlikely have the reach to attack UK #voters... so, may we see Rishi sabre-rattling & talking about defending #democracy over the next few weeks?
Its all getting even more Orwellian isn't it... the #Tories have announced a Democratic Policing Protocol which (surprise, surprise) offers a widened notion of what intimidation looks like....
And of #RishiSunak is claiming that there is a 'growing consensus that mob rule is replacing democratic rule'.
All of this sounds not so much about saving #democracy as stifling it... is it an exaggeration to wonder if 'mob rule' will be used to justify a delay to the next #election?
It is difficult to believe but Sunak is every bit as much a nasty piece of work as Bozo. This is nasty, vicious, unbecoming, gutter politics of the lowest form.
And I don't see how this is supposed to help Sunak convince waverers to vote Tory.
That #RishiSunak is happy to 'water down' (a phrase widely being used in reports that apparently the #Tories would prefer not to be used) measures to reach #NetZero, tells you that at the back of his mind is the assumption that he & his rich chums can buy their way our of the effects of the #climatecrisis.
Not only is this a lack of leadership on the #environment, it also misunderstands the direction of younger people's #political views;
its a short-term political gesture & yet more wrecking!
Good to get confirmation Rishi just doesn't give a fuck about anyone at all dying, rather than him just being unmoved by the loss of 5.5k kids in other countries.
I'm beginning to think that electing a billionaire as PM is marginally preferable to electing one who is an employee of billionaires, but pretending not to be. At least there's no pretence, and the public sees through the BS more readily
I'm a #driver (albeit low mileage & rural), but I don't want #RishiSunak to be on my side... what I want is some leadership to start to do something more about the #climatecrisis - I would have thought it would be the absolute priority for anyone who cared about their country..... oh, hold on
Quite apart from concerns about the costing & planning for #RishiSunak's #NetworkNorth rail proposals (intended to replace aspects of #HS2), for those of us living in #Lancaster & the surrounding areas, once again the large urban area of Lancaster-Morecambe is right in the middle of a blank area....
There's a strange blindness about Lancaster; we have a top 10 University, a major new visitor economy development (Eden North) & a large population yet somehow are always missing from plans!
