Thrilled to see that @alden's book Deep Oakland is a SF Chronicle best seller!

It's also the only book from an independent publisher on the list this week.

Congrats Andrew!

Hello !
We've heard and read a lot about the potential upcoming Meta project that intends to join the fediverse. We have also seen many instance admins committing to blocking these instances as soon as they appear. We are not going to commit to suspending them at this time, but we also won't commit to federating with them. As always, we are committed to giving potential problem instances extra attention; and this one will have our eyes fixed upon it.

We do not know when they will release their service, but when they do our moderators will be keeping an eye out for content that violates our CoC or otherwise threatens our users. Just like any server, if they become a nuisance or violate our server rules they will be limited. If there is risk of harm to our users, we will suspend them.

Please continue to report anything you see, and happy tooting!

Good morning, !
You may have seen your posts boosted by an account from “relay.fedi.buzz”. This ActivityPub relay is misbehaving, creating a lot of boosts. We are most concerned that it continues to boost public posts even when the account is blocked. We have suspended connections to this site in response.

We are happy to answer any questions you have!

Your public comment is needed by 6/16.

The Port of and the U.S. Army Corps have a plan to allow megaships to dock at the port. The project would create cascading and traffic issues in communities like (70% POC), already one of the most pollution-burdened areas of the state.

Video of a car passenger intentionally assaulting me on San Pablo Ave in West around 5:20 this afternoon (June 7). The passenger struck me on the side of my head and helmet, knocking off my glasses. Thankfully, I did not fall over. I am physically fine.

The car was waiting behind/alongside me at a red light on West St, and attacked me as we turned the corner into San Pablo after the light turned green. I was in the bike lane the entire time, and had no prior interaction with the car. The car is a black Nissan Altima with CA license plate 7HFV146. Here is a link to a longer, higher resolution version on YouTube: https://youtu.be/9rwH5uM33QE

Be careful out there, folks! I love riding bikes, and this won't stop me. It will only make me more determined to make our cities safer for bikes and pedestrians, whether the danger comes from oblivious drivers on their cell phones, or kids riding around intentionally attacking people. 🚲❤️ @BikeEastBay @RapidResponseTeam

Was there a farm in the heart of 19th century , California?

I came across this 1905 article which says:

"Jim Han…had been a resident of Berkeley for the last twenty years…Many years ago…[he] conducted a vegetable farm in what is now practically the heart of the town. His farm was on Center street and extended from Grove to Milvia…The man is probably 75 years old."

Doing the math, I presume the farm would have been there maybe 1890-ish?

Great perspective from an anonymous poster about , its , and its problem.

“I know that there are people who have a "lock em up" attitude and think this issue can be controlled by incarceration. But it can't, at least at the level of SFPD and local courts. For law enforcement to impact this problem, it will require the intervention of the federal government for their resources - and going far higher up the chain. Arresting street-level dealers and incarcerating them one at a time is not going to create even a dent; there are more kids crossing to take their place everyday.”

I feel like an under-appreciated factor in how people perceive public safety is that dense cities tend to feel more dangerous than sparse ones, because crimes tend to happen “near you” thanks to the sheer density of population.

has a terrible record at larceny, but on a per-capita basis, it’s about as bad as , WA. Yet I constantly hear people complain about how SF—not Spokane—is overrun by thieves. You’re also more than 2.5 times as likely to get burgled in , OK than in SF, but you don’t hear of a break-in crime wave in Tulsa.

Then you realize that SF is incredibly dense compared to those two cities, at over 17,000 residents per square mile. Spokane clocks in at 3k people/sqmi and Tulsa at 2k. NO WONDER crime always feels like it’s just around the corner—because it is, geographically speaking. The same per-capita crime rate would feel many times worse, because they are much more likely to happen closer to you.
