That red-purple mass between the rocks is a colony of starfish having a snooze in the sun (I'm assuming, there was zero movement, I'm guessing they're waiting for the tide). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pisaster_ochraceus

I didn't go too close, but a rough estimate would say 30-50 of them, at first sight (partly out of frame). No idea how many submerged.

The next prompt for is Triadic Colours, or 3 equidistant colours on the colour wheel. I went with secondary colours: orange, purple & green. My Lino block print of 2 Pisaster ochraceus, generally known as the purple sea star, ochre sea star, or ochre starfish, on a bed of kelp, is hand-printed on delicate white Japanese paper with bark inclusions. 🧵1/n

Starfish Are Basically Bodiless Heads Crawling Around The Ocean, Scientists Say
According to a new analysis of their gene expression, starfish and other echinoderms lack the architecture for an actual body.
They are essentially just mobile heads that sprouted the ability to crawl, say a team led by biologists Laurent Formery and Chris Lowe of Stanford University.

Long presumed to have no heads at all, may be nothing but
Naturalists have puzzled over what might constitute head of a , commonly called a "starfish." With five identical arms—any of which can take lead in propelling sea stars across seabed—it's been anybody's guess how to determine the front end of the organism from the back. Teams from Standford and Berkeley detected associated with head development just about everywhere in juvenile sea stars

Are Heads--Just Heads

A new study that combines and techniques helps solve the riddle of body plans, and how starfish start life with bilateral body symmetry – just like humans – but grow up to be adults with fivefold “pentaradial” symmetry.

It's Monday, so I'm starting new posts for my daily drawings.

Today, I'm playing with a bit of color gradient, starting in the center of these branches. It's very subtle, though.
