This week, the Wall Street Journal opinion section published an op-ed about our #tax coverage.

We don't typically comment on our newsgathering process, but this opinion essay has factual errors in the headline and in the essay that should be corrected.

We've submitted this to their editors:

Looking for an outlet to place my more #tech-focused (and thus less #tax or strictly #law) policy writing -- anyone know of an outlet that might be amenable to a freelance contributor?

DMs are open, I'm a weekly columnist at Bloomberg Tax, contributor to Forbes Money, among some others. Looking for a tech publication that wouldn't mine hearing a tax/tech attorney and prof opine on things like the currently being contemplated #FCC AI rules, etc.

This is my "Stop the SCOTUS" profile picture, if I used it as a profile picture. He AND Clarence need to be impeached & removed. If Democrats win House & Senate & do NOT expand the court, we will lose the ability to regulate pollution in this country, contraceptives/ abortion pills will be outlawed nationally, marriage equality will disappear, and more.

Can anyone recommend a good tax lawyer or accountant who can assist an individual with an 83(b) election where the person seeking the election is a U.S. resident but will be working for a Canadian startup?

Feel free to DM recommendations. Thanks in advance!

"Mansion" taxes are probably not going to ameliorate inequality anytime soon. Tying much-needed public services, like incentivizing the building of affordable housing, to revenue generated from them is not a good idea.

In my column this week I discuss the general idea of injecting progressivity into the property tax regime.

When property values go up, income doesn’t always follow suit. This gives rise to myriad breaks from the FMV—assessment paradigm, which brings with it … problems.

Key it to income. (Property) tax the rich. Full stop.

🇺🇸 🚗 🔌 US updates EV tax credit rules, enabling more electric cars to be eligible

"The U.S. Department of the Treasury and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) updated the EV tax credit rules [May 3rd] with new requirements that should enable more electric cars to become eligible.

Even though it has been in effect for over a year, the US has still been frequently updating its reformed federal incentive for electric vehicles. "

Sad to see the Guardian giving a platform to this bleating 'tycoon' claiming him & his rich chums will be leaving the UK due to it 'punitive' tax rates...

I'd expect a piece like this to be in the Torygraph... the only defence is that they expect people to see through this rich-person propaganda, but with no critical perspective on his claims or more balanced depiction of the tax system included, that a difficult case to make convincingly.

No, Biden has not proposed a general 44.6% long term capital gains rate.

Just on folks making $1m or more and $400k or more in investment income.

Not quite the average taxpayer.

There is always quite a lot of discussion about universal basic income in my timeline, and its an approach that has its supporters & detractors.

So, for those with time on their hands you might want to look at Ellis Winningham's pretty comprehensive series on UBI posted last year @BylinesScotland

There's lots to get your teeth into & I hope you find it helpful.

The Tories tax strategy in two charts:

For the 'average' worker the direct (income) tax burden has fallen... but for the country as a whole the tax burden has risen.

Certainly some higher eveners are now paying a little more but the key to this divergence has been the return to indirect taxation (such as VAT), which, of course, is regressive;

the poorer pay a higher proportion of their income in indirect taxes than the rich because they are flat-rated.

Government for the rich!

Chart: Rising Taxes. Taxes as a share of the UK economy. shows tax at around 36% in 1959 dropping to low of 28% in early 19690s, then oscillating between 30%-35% before finally rising above 35% recently

“The budget proposal is functional first step to begin internalizing the externalities wrought from private space flight—the short-term costs are unquestionably most evident in air traffic control. Using the internalization of that cost as a wedge to pursue broader policy initiatives that ensure the ongoing low-Earth congestion caused by increased satellite deployment is calculated and compensated for is a long-term solution.”

European nations grapple with a wave of public spending needs (energy transition, industry reinvestment, social programs etc.) in a sluggish economy. To get by, they face a stark choice: cut spending (as many are) – or increase revenue by targeting the wealthy, who currently pay relatively little.

This EDJNET investigation explores the disparity across and the potential benefits of systematically taxing the super-rich.
