The ones whose parents and grandparents had their land stolen and their relatives murdered time and time again by Israel with no one coming to help? Those parents? I wonder what those kids will think as they watch all their peers be murdered pointlessly. Maybe that revenge is a worthy cause?

In addition to the bazillionty things I said I would do this week, I need to get my astrobiology students to pick their final project topics: they have to evaluate a work of scifi on the plausibility of its aliens using what they learned from my astrobiology course.

I've asked here before, but I'll ask again: what are some scifi works that have really great aliens and/or alien worlds?

@sundogplanets I have to say Flatland as it's one of my favorite books though I'm not sure I'd classify the aliens as great; some of them are quite 1 dimensional.

    As you may recall, UPS drivers won a hard fought battle earlier this year for higher wages and less batshit working conditions so they don’t die of heat stroke.

    At the same time the company is laying off workers, the board of directors approved — for the 15th year in a row — an increase to the company’s quarterly dividend. This means that people are getting laid off, but shareholders are getting a raise."

    @CultureDesk an almost impossible question, but I'd say the shows where the genie escaped the bottle the most like Game of Thrones or The Office. Even if you don't watch TV or you never saw those shows, you know about them because their cultural impact was unavoidable. I've never seen Sopranos but I know exactly how it ended because it escaped into the zeitgeist.

    Maybe Breaking Bad as #1? It dominated both the water cooler and the award shows unlike almost any of its peers.

    In any scam, any con, any hustle, the big winners are the people who supply the scammers - not the scammers themselves. The kids selling dope on the corner are making less than minimum wage, while the respectable crime-bosses who own the labs clean up. Desperate "retail investors" who buy shitcoins from Superbowl ads get skinned, while the MBA bros who issue the coins make millions (in real dollars, not crypto).

    @pluralistic I found a scammer on TikTok, she apparently has a real Ph.D (physics) and an actual non-profit and if you can just get her 10 million dollars, her 100% effective and very real cure for cancer will be available and free for all.
    She's already gained at least 2.5m dollars. I submitted a complaint to her state's attorney general but I have little hope it'll go anywhere.

    Which seems quite nebulous and confusing (to me) for such a thing to be debunked as I can see many examples of them.

    I think I understand the definition y'all are using and in what way but it's Monday morning and I may still be asleep.
