Feminists taught me that Mad Max Fury Road is not a feminist movie. I get that.

Fury Road was just an action movie where the violent protagonist was a woman with a visible disability, instead of an able bodied man. I get that.

But I still enjoy the fact that George Miller looked at all the dudes that got angry that a woman was the star of a Mad Max movie, and said "Cry about it!" and doubled down.

I am so watching this.

@mekkaokereke Sadly it’s still ableist: Fury Road had a person with albinism as the villain. People with albinism very rarely appear; usually are “white face” and don’t cast one of us; are usually villains; and are extremely rarely portrayed accurately for our disability. Our disability is used as shorthand for evil and/or a blank canvas.

@sarahmatthews @bookstodon Yes. I’m currently reading Yellowface. Everyone was raving about the race issues but I think it’s a perfect take-down of the publishing industry. I’m surprised a mainstream publisher picked it up.

@sarahmatthews @bookstodon I haven’t finished it yet, I’ve been distracted by “The Trail” (Lehrmann v Ch10) and my property manager issued an eviction notice 7 days before Christmas as you do after a court ordered the landlord to bring the house up to minimum legal standards. We’re moving a few months later, can’t move twice. I’ve been writing my appeal. Sigh. Next week I’ll get back into Yellowface.

@JenMsft Lol. I’ve been spending loads of time on Twitter lately because of the Lehrmann trial and that’s where people were talking about it. I won’t bother listening to the plaintiff’s summary (tomorrow), I’ll wait for the verdict or at least the recall. And I’m enjoying spending less time on socials overall but also people not behaving like aggressive magpies are nice. Hence the fediverse IMO

@MsHearthWitch I don’t do those crafts. I make cards. Been down and stressed lately so I haven’t finished anything. I have painted paper for use, I have card backgrounds covered in paw prints (some of which are sparkly and some glow in the dark - I hope). A bundle of Halloween card making supplies ordered in August arrived a few days after Halloween. This includes some super cute animal stamps so I’m inspired to do something not too stressful.

@MsHearthWitch the sentiments don’t fit with anything else but they were still new, I’ve had them for a few years and had only used one. So I tried to do some bulk sentiments but was getting gold where I didn’t want it. In the end I figured out what I was doing wrong, and will improve. Re the paws, I was thinking a smaller image in the centre of the paws, using some of these stamps. I am too selfconscious about my eyesight to draw any more so stamps are good

@MsHearthWitch :-( the sparkly paws are just NOT sparkling in the video like they do in real life. I’m talking a RAINBOW of sparkles in each pawprint although it’s still kind of black on black. Do you like animals? I confess I’m crazy about my dog and have a tenuous relationship with my cats. I love them but they alternate between smooges and bites.

@MsHearthWitch Cats are both entertaining and hard work. Dogs, however… My husband was all “I don’t like dogs, I do not want a dog, but I will support you getting a seeing eye dog because I know your vision is deteriorating”. Within 2 months Silkie was sleeping in our bedroom and he bought her a second bed, one for the lounge room one for the bedroom. He was wrapped around her paw. Nothing like “YOU’RE HOME, I MISSED YOU” greeting you as you walk in after a day at work 😊

@MsHearthWitch My son (30) is a cat person. Since we moved back to the same city, he’s usually visited us because he’s concerned about my dog and his cats. However, last time we were at his together he invited Silkie on the couch because he wanted couch cuddles. (I warned him that if he did it once it’d be the rule so he thought about it for a while.) I think his cats being ok with Silkie was the final piece in winning him over.

@MsHearthWitch that’s lovely. My cats hated my dog when she arrived. They were never socialised by other cats so now it seems they look to Silkie like an older sister/example of how to furry. Meteor is temperamental, can be really antisocial. Feliway is helping. Today Meteor “chased” (not literally) Silkie off the couch then, FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, Silkie hopped on the footrest and effectively pushed Meteor out. He was miffed because she lay down in “his” space.

I think that the worst and most dangerous misconception have about is that it's this sort of turbocharged "Beast Mode" that can go into to increase their production, win wars, and make the trains run on time, and that the primary objections to it centre on whether the "obvious" increase in efficiency that fascism offers is worth the loss of and lives. But in reality regimes like to put up a façade of strength and efficiency, even as they practice on a scale unimaginable in and even as the public interest is hollowed out by parasitical . There is no trade-off; fascism is a all the way down.

In the book someone talks about doing something then not knowing why they’re doing it later but it’s all they have. I felt seen. I started DMZ 13 years ago and in many ways I regret it but it’s all I have thanks to discrimination & abuse. Wondering how much to say in the review, while feeling that quote is very important. No easy answers.

2. I saw a video (forget who by but it was reputable) explaining that because it’s a civil case if they plead the 5th the judge can take that as the worse possible interpretation/admission. If they don’t cooperate they can be ruled hostile and interrogated. Pundits rubbing their hands in anticipation.

@CultureDesk @bookstodon Tbh I don’t think I ever knew China was involved but I grew up in the shadow of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we had to study the impact of a nuclear bomb on the human body etc for grade 10. Gave me nightmares for years. Plus there were all those movies.
