For the sake of the Autistic people in your life.

"Autistic burnout is more than being tired"

Yes, there can be exhaustion. There can also be an infinite number of other ways it presents.

Not everyone stops during burnout. Some people push through. Some people shutdown completely. Some people feel like they are losing their minds.

Professionals and families need to realise that Autistic burnout is a traumatic experience.

We need to stop dodging the question of disability. It's okay to be disabled and Autistic, trying to keep the two concept separate is in itself a form of ableism.

The following is a survey asking for the language preferences of Autistic and non-Autistic people regarding autism.

It is open to Autistic and non-Autistic people for the benefit of comparison.

I will also be using the preference results of Autistic people on the "neurodiversity: the basics" page of my website.

Please do fill this out and RT it, I would like to get at least 1000 responses.

Psychiatry in the west has been built upon a long history of colonial aggression. If you are part of a minority group, chances are you will end up in a psychiatrists office at some point in your life.

Psychiatry then positions the problem in your brain, rather than the political and material circumstances of your life.

Psychiatry needs to do better.

If a professional tells you to grieve your Autistic loved one's diagnosis, stop seeing that professional.

No matter their struggle, no matter the perceived value of their individual existence. They have value, they have life.

Do not grieve the living. Grieve the society that views disabled people as something less than alive.

I remember getting this 5 star review from Dr. Nick Walker. Nick has been one of the leading minds of the neurodiversity movement for over two decades. Her conceptualisation of neuroqueer theory has been groundbreaking.

My book is available in most territories, but do let me know if you have difficulty finding it 😊

Forcing a person back to the source of their trauma with no meaningful support or accommodations is placing lives in danger. The new government push to get kids back into school is a danger to disabled communities.

The problem is isn't that the kids are not in school, it's that school is not a safe environment for all kids.

A reflection for Weird Pride Day

Weird Pride Day celebrates embracing individuality and resisting societal pressure to conform. It challenges the stigma around being "weird" and advocates for self-acceptance. March 4th serves as a day of empowerment to dismantle normativity and honor those who have suffered due to societal expectations. Involvement includes showing support online and promoting individuality.

During the holidays, we often end up spending a lot of time with family.

It'd okay to say no to family.

It's okay to stay away from family.

It's okay to engage with family on your own terms.

No one should expect you to fit into their worldview of what family should be.

Stability in recovery requires more than abstinence. It requires support in all domains of life.

Autistic people, in particular, are more likely to struggle with social deprivation, and for us to achieve recovery and/or sobriety, we need support that takes account of the unique challenges that we face.

It's a good thing when more people get their diagnosis. It validates their struggle and increases the chance of them finding Autistic spaces.

While we should work towards a world where diagnosis is not required, we need to recognise that people without a diagnosis struggle a lot.

Autistic burnout: How do you recover?

Autistic burnout is a unique struggle for each individual, impacting cognitive and physical resources. Recovery involves understanding personal needs, setting protective boundaries, avoiding excessive limitations, and allowing time for focused activities. Celebrating small victories and seeking mental health support are essential. Embracing change is crucial, as recovery is attainable with the support of the Autistic community.

It's a long report, but has some really important statistics in it

Today I am 8 years Sober!

The past 8 years have not been simple. I have had to build a new life. I have spent time in institutions and been diagnosed Schizophrenic. Importantly I was also diagnosed Autistic (that will be 8 years ago next November).

I couldn't have imagined that I would get 8 years into sobriety. I thought life was over. Now I am an author, an independent academic. A mentor, an independent advocate.

The most beautiful part of my life now is being a father, and the three children in my life have renewed my devotion to leaving the world a little better than I found it.

Thank you to all of you. Without my neurokin, my family and loved ones, I could not have achieved this

Autism is not a problem. Here's a list of things that are:

Inaccessible learning environments
Reduced life expectancy
Sky high sucde rate
Increased self-medication
Inaccessible and ableist healthcare systems
Unemployment and poverty
Discrimination
Increased rates of victimisation
High likelihood of mental health concerns
Gatekeeping of services
Higher rates of institutionalised parent carer blame

@actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy @neurodiversity

DivergentDumpsterPhoenix,
@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix@disabled.social avatar

This is not an exhaustive list. You are welcome to add your own contributions.

The point I am making is this; research priorities should be to improve the lives of Autistic people here now, and those to come. Research into why we exist and how to prevent it does no good for our community.
