It’s good that people try not to push pointless tech projects… And the majority of new tech projects are obviously pointless. To get an idea of what to push do a review and publish this, let’s build a community of useful tech together. We need to do better.

has made so much over the last 10 years. There are piles of and alt tech that needs to be composted to grow a more humane world.

and the media are always a problem that is hard to do anything about. They shift the focus from the grassroots to themselves and tell stories because this is what the media wants to hear.

The undercurrents that are the story drifts back into the flow and nothing is understood, no change or challenge happens.

We are sold for someone's fragile egos' moment of feeling important.

This is crap behaviour.

The "protocol wars" on the such as , , and . That building bridges between these protocols can be a good solution, as it is a permissionless way to connect different protocols without needing to get the codebase to change their project. The protocols are all and native, which is a positive development. However, the cultures of these protocols are different and can create messiness in the discussions.

    We need to STOP pushing only as this is not helping, just look at the SPAM currently spewing from this process. With this mess we are building a codebase and an instance that are "too big to fail" this is absurdly stupid and not needed.

    Please link and talk about the or the to start to compost the mess you are, making, thanks.

    OK can someone explain this:
    a) what I see in my app when viewing @openfuture's toot. No link!
    b) when viewed in a browser. Link included.

    My app only shows 3 toots. They have published over 50.

    Is this my app (tusky), or is this a broken network?

    Hamishcampbell,

    @mathew @rmdes @openfuture @megalodon

    Nothing should be changed on the instance, might be local adblocker or browser?

    The "protocol wars" of new protocols, including , , and , am suggesting that bridges between them are a good solution to the current issues. All of these protocols are and native, which is a positive development. However, the cultures of these protocols are different and this can create messiness in the discussions.

    I advocate for a grassroots culture and urge people to focus on building bridges rather than adding to the mess.

    Hamishcampbell,

    @raccoon so we ignore this mess and push the content across with a bridge - we make the protocols into "dumb pipes" this is the path of the

    I understand this is the best of the BAD solutions, but it's easy and most impotently "permissionless" so we can seed diversity. From this we might get somewhere not

    Hamishcampbell, (edited )

    @raccoon the key part is we don't have to ask its and yes not saying you are not right, the current non federated would be pointless.

    all ready has a working 2 way bridge to , I am transparently reading and replying to users.

    Rad things about mastodon we take for granted

    CW - these are amazing

    Editing posts - hard to go back once you taste this

    Alt text as the norm - total community enforcement

    Replies - option to delist them so we don’t clog the feed

    Timeline curating - we have near infinite timeline options with filters, lists, local, federated, hashtags etc

    Muting - we can choose a time period!

    Character count - 500 let’s you get an effing thought out

    Ownership - we can own the damn thing ourselves

    Hamishcampbell,

    @seachanger this is "signal" more please :)

    He believes it's a setback to the Fediverse and slowing its growth.

    Hamishcampbell,

    @alfredohno @evan @atomicpoet @fediversenews

    This is likely an impossible ask on both sides, so the simple thing to do is code a bridge https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/lets-talk-about-the-protocol-wars/3177 please have your say here it is where our project devs hang out and work like this is decided.

    For people who do not see the activism in this. Chicken and egg - we already have the egg - it's the now can we nurture this to hatch a chicken. Or will our egg be stolen by magpies - see our making a mess of the "protocol wars" on this subject.

    Hamishcampbell, to fediverse

    What is doing now is going to lead to a lot of mess, due to people squabbling.

    So here’s my thought on the Mastodon/Bluesky divide.

    Try every network so you know it’s out there. Know that there are some people who want certain things out of their social media. Know that those may not be the things you want.

    I don’t particularly love image-driven social media, so I mostly stay off Instagram. I value openness, so I found a home here.

    There are some nice features on Mastodon. There are some nice features on Bluesky. They may not be the things you, personally, want.

    Hamishcampbell,

    @wjmaggos @ernie

    Maybe try and get the tech journalists to talk about this https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/lets-talk-about-the-protocol-wars/3177

    Hamishcampbell, (edited )

    @ernie @wjmaggos

    This is missing the point of activism, pushing needed change, this is why the exists... meany of our people making mess are right it is NOT A SPACE FOR their "common sense" it's a place for a grassroots DIY culture - the mess we need to compost is people not seeing this...

    They push their blinded views over this bridge :)

    Mess and more mess, is not a good look in the era of real change is urgently needed https://visionon.tv/w/gq6qCiUoC2J8RqhYHgpmzq

    Hamishcampbell,

    @ernie @wjmaggos

    Yep, we are talking past each other, let's try and focus.

    Keep our "tent" standing to bring more people in from the rain.

    is less of an issue in this reboot from the hundreds of projects that have failed over the last 20 years... so the is doing MUCH better on this front.

    Let's work with this step, to take the next step, please try and avoid tripping over the tent pegs and bring the thing down, so we are all left in the rain ;)

    Been thinking a lot lately about the conflict between:

    • Making the web more open and interoperable with APIs, data exports, and easier search functionality

    • The need for privacy and consent with opt-in defaults, protections against data scraping / mining, owned + siloed websites

    These values seem fundamentally opposed to me, no? Am I missing something?

    Hamishcampbell,

    @mariyadelano THIS IS A VERY GOOD POINT.

    Hamishcampbell,

    @mariyadelano

    This is a part of the mess of mixing up personal (privacy) and public news/media that the did for ten years. We have reproduced this mess on the without composting.

    We already have a solution for this is public, encrypted chat applications are private

    The problem is we have unthinking people trying to do the mess of mixing these up. This is all to common crap behaver.

    News need to be and in public

    Live only for a few hours - we launched this group late last night - it already has over 40 developers/followers starting to do exactly that.

    @tchambers @activitypubblueskybridge @mmasnick @anildash @manton

    I have been pushing bridges for a while as they are the lowest common denominator and can be built and implemented "permissionless" to allow people to cross protocols.

    "Permissionless" is important as the is no way you would get consensus to do this, without much mess.

    Technically people codeing the protocols are to bussey with tribalism to focus on cross protocol interop... or they would not be building a new protocol

    Hamishcampbell,

    @aswath @tchambers @activitypubblueskybridge @mmasnick @anildash @manton

    That's fine, nobody has to federate, the advantage of a bridge is you do not have to get the codebase to change their project - it's just a relay that connects one protocol to another, "permissionless" they can unfederate from this if they like.

    It's a BAD, good tech solution, and likely the best we can do to mediate the current squealing mess out make.

    Hamishcampbell, (edited )

    @aswath @tchambers @activitypubblueskybridge @mmasnick @anildash @manton

    All the projects are actually kinda good, they are mostly and native this is a BIG move away from the yes TICK
