"What is happening at Boeing is happening in every industry. A general trend toward financialisation & hedge fund culture that sees only numbers, not peoples lives or wellbeing. It's just that aviation has a way of making the corruption impossible to hide. It's the dead canary." - Ben King

@ned I'm sure someone will come along soon with some "seif regulating market" bs, so before that happens: I think if a govt has to bail a company out, that is clearly a company that has become nationalized and needs to be operated as a public interest.

Otherwise, let them fail like Pan Am and so many others.

8 hours sleep, 8 hours work, 8 hours free time, weekends off.

I feel that too few people appreciate how many fought and how many were murdered by the rich before the schedule we take for granted was finally won.

I started reading a book on "cult" cinema written by people who worked for TCM Underground and it is just making me sad.

So much is out of print, not on streaming, and barely or not at all available through illicit means.

And these are films that people are writing Books about. What hope does a film that didn't catch the attention of a critic have? (Often, the answer is none!)

I mean, you can hate on Steam because of DRM, overhead, fees, asset-flips, hate speech, thinly disguised porn, AI-made games, or whatever - but there's also this:
    https://luxurylaunches.com/transport/gabe-newell-luxury-yachts.php

30%. I am supposed to give this dude $100 + 30% + fees of every game I put on Steam.

Now you know why we promote Itch and Gog, where at least the cut is smaller.

I hear people are panicking about tiktok going away.
Maybe they could suggest their fans follow them to @owncast?
Then they'd be on a platform where they were in control of their content.

Now that my work for my prior dayjob is over, I have been able to return their apple laptop and now have room for my model M again.

Oh it feels so nice to once again do the majority of my typing on a real keyboard designed for real use. Had this thing since 1997 and I hope I die before it does :D

I'm so exhausted by the privileged networking game that is game dev.

I don't give 2 bits about what people able to afford to drop everything and fly to San Francisco have to say about game dev.

I want to know what the kids doing dev with a 10 year old laptop and no money are doing.

I want to hear about the successes of the people pursuing games while holding down full-time jobs in a failing economy.

I am interested in optimizations made to run on machines 80% of people have, not next gen.

It took years but we finally got a 10th review that Steam felt like counting (there's over 17 total reviews plus curators), so we have an official review rating on Steam for

Folks, pleare remember to review games. Stuff like Steam buries your games if you don't get enough reviews fast enough.

    @vpermar An electronics store?
With actual electronics on shelves and things you could see in person, not just a tiny section of a walmart?
What next, a music store where you can buy actual CDs and listen to them to see if you like them?

I always see people complaining about triple A titles - the content, the price, the spyware-laden DRM, the micro transactions. What I don't see is very many people hyping the small studio games, the solo devs, the games that sit under $10 and have no DRM or micro transactions at all. There's literally thousands of them released every year.

So maybe take that big complaint energy and put it towards encouraging the kind of things you want to see.

The Hays Code is over, which restricted making violent, gay, socialist, vulgar, or (apparently) thoughtful cinema. All we seem to get is gore and swearing.

Stop hiding behind gore and profanity, you cowards, bring back Capra style films.

I used to really suggest Tidal frequently because they were better for artists than Spotify, if you were into the streaming thing.

Unfortunately, as of today they've retired their Roku app, adding that to their graveyard of supported platforms (along with my digital audio player, my living room hifi streamer, and my tablet)

So I'm left with just my phone (since if I could use the web client, I'd already have access to my media).

    Guess I'm done with them.

@jackwilliambell That's why I felt it was worth bringing it up. There needs to be more discussion about it so people don't feel like they're the only one.

@jackwilliambell Same, I love buying physical and digital releases from artists, because having been an artist much of my life, I know how much those little emails mean.

I remember when the only way you could fill a tank to get to the next show was to move enough CDs and cassettes and stickers at the current show.

This just underscores the point people like @pluralistic are constantly making - enshittification is an active process.

Even paying a platform every month isn't enough.

Own your media. There's literally no other choice.

I keep thinking how much more logical would be if someone actually had created local hierarchies like they exist for a few places. there's a france. hierarchy which has groups for all kinds of places in the country.

instead some places, esp. in Germany have hierarchies for themselves (like nbg. or bln.) while Austria has at. and oesterreich., UK has both uk. and england. etc.

but barely anyone is using these by now anyway, so it's a moot point.

@kyonshi MELVYL was a computerized mainframe based digital card catalog, to my understanding one of the first (and one of the last around).

It was amazing, and it had every single book in the entire UC system in it, so you could effectively find so many details about books, order them for loan, etc. Over 30 million records.
