Do you see a series of sunken rectangles or 16 circles?
This is The Coffer Illusion.
Our brains are geared toward identifying objects & here, “pixels” are grouped to form edges & contours, shapes, & objects. The image is inherently ambiguous so there is no “right” grouping.
Rectangles dominate first for most people - including me, but keep staring & the image may flip to circles.
On the one hand, the Supreme Court has not been favorable, overall, to Trump's reelection. In 2020, they threw out a case brought by Republicans to have four Democratic states ejected from the election, for example.
But on the other hand, now with two justices' wives taking public actions to support Trump's reelection, it's really hard to take the idea of impartiality seriously. If you're the spouse of a justice, and if you took SCOTUS's work seriously, you'd sit it out. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/16/us/justice-alito-upside-down-flag.html

An upside-down flag, adopted by #Trump supporters contesting the Biden victory, flew over the justice’s front lawn as the Supreme Court was considering an election case. #SCOTUS
For those losing their heads over today's actions by Judge Cannon, take a deep breath. This was always going to happen. The writing has been on the wall since Judge Cannon was drawn for the case. Getting all worked up about it is only going to make you crazy and desperate. The way we will rid ourselves of this menace is at the polls in November.
For a sober discussion on this topic this exchange today between @Teri_Kanefield and @JonChevreau is highly recommended:
@mastodonmigration@Teri_Kanefield@JonChevreau the writing being on the wall doesn’t excuse the total failure of the the justice system to hold him accountable. It’s almost like you are normalizing this. Let us be angry
I’ll bet the dialogue about complicated situations here would be a whole lot better if half this place quit responding to every Jewish person and posting about every current event with some wacky anti-Jew conspiracy theory or incredibly raging antisemitic junk that’s worse than the old original tropes themselves. Not that anyone enjoys hearing them over and over, either.
Oh, and that instances actually moderate about it. Especially if something like this is in their instance code of conduct.
I’m here to post cat and flower pictures. Posting about antisemitism is exhausting, but not as exhausting as encountering it and seeing it dismissed or even amplified by other users. The context here is a deleted post which has been screenshot elsewhere (“Jews put a premium on the lives of sons. Daughters? Not so much. They'll toss them to a crowd of rapists” ). This church of Jeff account defends that vile statement and spreads the old fashioned style of #antisemitism which seeks to portray Jewish texts as perverse and Jews as perverse and sinister. Why do so many people follow an account that promotes antisemitic libels? Do they agree? because it sure looks like it.
🇦🇷Argentina: Mystery flu 'similar to COVID' leaves dozens critically ill as doctors on high alert.
"An alert about the mystery virus circulated via international public health surveillance system ProMed as 60 people were reported with the sickness in Argentina."
After the police raided the Gaza solidarity encampment on Columbia University campus last week, arresting over 100 people but failing to suppress it, they conceded that the demonstrators could stay if they didn't put up tents.
What is really happening here is a generational clash between those who benefit from a world order founded on colonial violence and those for whom it is unconscionable.
Trump's #lawsuit claims that Litinsky & Moss, who were both contestants on Trump’s reality-TV show “The Apprentice,” mishandled an attempt to take Trump Media public several years ago, allegedly putting the whole project “on ice” for >1½ yrs.
[how much you wanna bet he trying to find a way around the 6 month lock up provision?]
