@Paperposts@zirk.us

Now my primary account - supposed to be a home for all my paper, design, art, poetry and ephemera ramblings. But is ending up a place I post bird and landscape photos, with the occasional climate, environment and tech bits thrown in.

@ai6yr asks about practical utility cycling:

Q3. I live in a suburb slowly moving to become more bicycle friendly. I'm wondering what the "max" and "ideal" bicycling distance is to things like grocery stores and shops are in more bicycle friendly places in the world? What is the upper limit for convenience?

(I edited the question slightly, hope that I did it ok!)

@ascentale @ai6yr
A3.
I lived in Malmö and Copenhagen - no car.
in Malmö I’d cycle 1.5 miles to the better supermarket. But would walk to close by markets for everyday things and in bad weather.
In Copenhagen we a great cargo bike and would happily cycle 2+ miles to favorite markets. But lots of walking options too.

I think the key constraints for me were weather and time (as no hills). If you can get to the shop and back in under 1h and you aren’t a mess by the time you get there it works.

“Interesting” type things in the chicago hotel I was just in. Multiple lift call buttons with signage on use, signs to advise on non fictional “historic artifacts”

A walk will 2 sets of lift call buttons. Above the set on the left a sign reads “Please Use Call Buttons To The Right”

The has changed its privacy policy to allow the site-formerly-known-as-Twitter to use posts there to train its own . https://www.engadget.com/elon-musks-x-will-use-public-data-to-train-ai-models-184924197.html

@ai6yr if there’s going to be an AI that’s becomes sentient and decides to destroy humanity, it will surely be the one trained on tweets.

No detectable rain last night in the Black Rock Desert per the automated weather station someone installed there for . Official forecast says chance of precip 70% today and 30% tonight. Grim situation with the toilets, 73,000 people with overflowing porta potties seems.... bad. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AfpmyriBHIFQ_Jymw3wHn9dtAGTgLcAjbnogNPsLvEA/edit#gid=0

I can't remember where I grabbed this text from on the order of adjectives, but this feels like a good creative prompt for linguistic rule breakers and maybe even a way to have fun with the generative models.
But does "Great Green Gobs of Greasy, Grimy Gopher Guts" break the rule? If gobs are material rather than shape I guess not.

Given enough time and social media photos, I bet you could automatically build a 3D model of a person's physical environment....

@ai6yr do you recall the stalker who found out a girls address from the reflection of a bus stop out side in her glasses. Horrible and with the help of ai who knows how easy it will be (and of course to reveal and infer personal details)

Has anyone found a useful tool to explore an exported archive? I finally got off the platform and exported all my folders and their notes. It had been my tool for 10+years so there is a lot! Even after some drastic pruning there are about 5175 notes and over 8gbs of stuff. I have all manner of things tucked in there and attached to notes. I wrote some simple javascript that creates an index.html page for the archive (lists all the notes by section) - can share if wanted

Did you know that wasn't always pink?

Prior to the 17th century, English people thought of pink as a shade of greenish yellow. It was won by boiling buckthorn berries.

It was only when carnations became a popular that the idea that pink is a very light shade of , shifted.

Paperposts,

@mythologyandhistory @DevraWiz is the idea that the term “pink” comes from an association of the serrated edges of carnation petals with “pinking shears” a myth?

Well, that's annoying. Until last week was posting their graphical stories to their webpage, which allowed me to repost them here. They now are ONLY posting them on FB and the crappy-site-once-known-as-Twitter.

@ai6yr that’s not just annoying that’s irresponsible to only post to crappy private platforms.

whilst trying to find the source of "franglais" I picked up a gem that I'd forgotten about. Which has the best title and makes me think we are now living in an Oulipian digital reality.
Also seems to reflect the main drive of all critical theory and media literacy studies of the last 50 years

Apparently, the has just launched "Woke Watch", where red faced pillocks send in angry e-mails, complaining about transgender asylum seekers giving their house prices pronoun cancer, or something.

Anyway, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should one e-mail wokewatch@dailymail.co.uk to , or just plain take the piss. No, that would be WRONG. Oh, for shame!

@alexanderhay Charlie Brooker (black mirror) used to have a fabulous web zine in the 90s called TV Go Home, which was a fabulously snarky take on a page from the TV Times - on it was the fake show called Daily Mail Island, this will be worse.

hi all , and folk. I have a column set up to show me posts on visual poetry etc. And it's gone pretty quiet. Except for a few fabulous regulars like:
@JPK_elmediat (and @JPK_elmediat )
@scearley
@LauraKerrArt
@jshb32

Anyone got any tips to pull more in, or folk to follow - what's another good hashtag to add? so far it's this:

@LauraKerrArt thanks for letting me know it's quiet elsewhere too - at least that means it's not broken here (I'm only here these days). And thank you for immediately posting something!

Paperposts,
@Paperposts@zirk.us avatar

@JPK_elmediat @LauraKerrArt yes there's definitely a skew to digital art, computational and generative stuff. I enjoy that, but really love the non computer versions or early computer experiments. Like the Aaron Marcus piece I posted. I'm going raid my library tonight, to see what I can post. Also, thank you for the many interesting things you share!

The trick to doing successful voice synthesis demos in the early days was to make sure that the listeners knew what was going to be said in advance. Best of all, let them type in what they want the voice to say. 100% recognition, every time! Trust me on this.

"The Tragedy of the Commons" was written by a eugenicist and was effectively debunked as ahistorical fantasy decades ago. More propaganda in the service of privatizing public space and resources. Pass it on. https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/voices/the-tragedy-of-the-tragedy-of-the-commons/
