The rich turquoise hue of this lake isn't "supposed" to be at such a high alpine location, because as everyone knows, turquoise is a color reserved for the tropics.

Except when it isn't. Nature never limits herself to what she is supposed to do, but does what she does. And on this day, she decided that she liked the color turquoise and was going to use it.

I like that attitude.

It's understandable that if we want to go someplace, we want to get there quickly. That's why we have freeways.

But there are days when we want to get someplace and there is no freeway, simply a winding country road that looks intent upon taking its time. And we can either be frustrated, or accept the road for what it is, and enjoy the view along the way.

It wasn't a path you necessarily wanted to run over or rush through -- shadows dappled among the sunlight obscured the roots and rocks that hid under the leaves.

But since it was an intriguing place, pleasantly so, there was nothing bothersome about having to slow the pace to an unhurried one.

It's easy to get in such a hurry that we don't notice the landscape around us -- which is boldly, loudly in a visual way, trying to get our attention.

On our life's road we can have the same experience. While we have ambitions and goals -- which is a good thing -- it can be easy to focus on them so strongly that we don't notice the landscape around us.

There was an entire landscape through which they ran, grazed, strolled, stayed together, and watched out for one another.

In the background, the mountains were protective, benevolent, a refuge in which they lived, totally oblivious to the existence of metropolises, cell phones, automobiles, and TV sets.

Sunset is a time for contemplation, for slowing down as the day comes to a close. And while sunsets are always worth taking time to see, they are especially emotive at the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA.

The colors in both light and shadow are ephemeral, shifting and changing from one moment to the next. A majestic place, made even more divine.

The mountain looked imposing, daunting for the average person to cross over, go around, get past, but as with any challenge, it wasn't impossible.

It was a matter of time, determination, planning, skill, and the willingness to look into various options.

That's what life is -- a journey that takes us through valleys and to and past mountains.

It's like magic when you tell a child that green is made up of blue and yellow -- I enjoy watching them experiment with crayons and discovering, hey, it's true!

Nature uses the yellow of sunshine and the blue of water to create the lush green grass and leaves of spring.

And it's magical.

Peace is not something that any political party has shown, through history, it is interested in pursuing.

But individual people, wanting to live their lives with normalcy and a semblance of security, do value peace.

High tech, gleaming chrome, minimalist and grey is a trend in some quarters, but not in others. It is a testament to our unique individuality that we gravitate toward what pleases us, what brings us joy.

Electricity is a fantastic invention, and I certainly wouldn't want to go back to a life of candles and kerosene. But like any technology, it has its pitfalls, and one of them is that we forget what nature's night lights look like.

Is there such thing as a Great Awakening? I suspect that if there were, it would be quickly taken over by the authorities of the day and reconfigured to their satisfaction.

Waves against the rocks

Reach up into the beach sand

Then slowly recede.

The mesmerizing sound and sight of the sea capture the imagination, and I stand amazed at how quickly the minutes flow by as I watch. The surf foams as it tickles the rocks, then recedes quickly back into the arms of the sea.

Is there a path?

Well, there appeared to be one a minute ago, maybe, sort of. But now it just looks like some leftover water from high tide. Which may not matter if my plan is to make it to the sea . . .

Life at the beach is a constant reminder of the temporal nature of things: what was there last night may disappear without a trace by morning.

In the U.S., we are taught from a young age that efficiency is supreme: our job is to work quickly, accurately, productively -- kind of like a machine.

But efficiency lacks in creativity, thought, and soul. It is a straight freeway bypassing scenery for time. The winding roads, though not quick, invite us to BE in in both moment and place.
