Rugged peaks form a ring encircling a high, clear, pristine, alpine lake. This is a landscape of intense silence, one where you can sit on a boulder along the banks, look out over the water, and think pleasant, interesting thoughts (why be grumpy in a place like this?).

Maybe it's because it's such a deliciously warm spring where I live that my mind and spirit fly over to the ocean.

The first thing I do is kick off my shoes. The next thing is to walk straight into the surf and let it play around my feet. And then I begin walking.

If you need to get someplace, there is always a way through, around, over, under, above, or whatever appropriate prepositions you can find.

It may not be easy, and it might be quite challenging, unnerving, or even frightening. But when we are insistent about something, we find a way.

When I am at the ocean, as much as I enjoy the sea itself, I revel in watching the clouds overhead. Just as there is a great expanse of water, so also is there a magnificent display of sky, and especially before or after a storm, the clouds are splendid in their moodiness, broodiness, and drama.

I am always amazed at the power of water, whether it is one drop at a time falling onto a rock over centuries, or a massive confluence that gathers strength until it plunges over a sheer cliff into the bubbling pool below.

When we focus on doing something we enjoy -- putting our mental and physical energy to its success, concentrating our intellect upon it -- we derive enjoyment and satisfaction from the process.

It doesn't matter what it is -- it's gratifying. Which means . . . it's not a bad idea to do this more.

Silent night arrives

With only the sound of surf

Skimming over sand.

Sunset on the coast -- low tide. The waves are easy, soft, gentle, with no sense of hurry or rush. The sun as well takes its time, calmly and slowly descending on the horizon until only its glow remains.

When I was a kid, our calendars had holidays marked out in red: a red letter day was a special one, worthy of standing out from the rest of the week.

Some days spontaneously turn into red letter days, regardless of what the calendar says. These are days of joy and freedom, enjoyed with family and friends.

If sailboats could smile, this one was -- on a perfect sunny day with just enough breeze to be brisk, and warm golden rays from above adding light and warmth to the mix. It was a day to just get out and explore, not worrying about any particular destination, but being satisfied with the journey itself.
