Green -- it's the color of spring, new life, light, hope, and outrageous growth. Some days, when you sit by the river and watch the water flow slowly by, you swear you can hear the grass rustling as it reaches for the sky.

When we are waiting for something, someone, it is an ache, a drive deep inside our heart that simply can't be easily wished away. If it could, then it would be because you really haven't wanted it. Don't feel bad that you can't give up wanting what you're waiting for.

Every landscape in its season has its unique personality. Here in the Wallowa Valley of Oregon, USA, spring is wet and cool, in preparation for the short summer. So much green, so much new life!

At the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA, the sun appears to go down in layers. Down in the depths, shadows reign, while the last vestige of pulsating glow dances across the tops of the cliffs. It is quiet, calm, serene, and peaceful.

Flowers aren't difficult -- they stay in the basket where they belong, waiting to be arranged into a spring bouquet. But cats . . . they never stay where we want them, such as in our arms or laps. Unless, of course, we don't want them there . . .

When I was a kid, I used to take a lot of rambling walks through the country, and while as an adult I tend to plan my hikes, I still enjoy a good ramble. You never know what you'll see when you crest that little hill.

There is a false confidence, and a true one. False confidence involves pretending to be who you are not, and acting as if you know things you don't know. Real confidence comes from unabashedly being yourself.

Family -- we are the first, best, and always teachers. We are not paid by the corporations, nor honored by the world of media, but we pass on our values to the next generation by living them ourselves.

You can't gulp down scalding hot coffee -- no matter how much of a hurry you're in, you have to either slowly sip and savor, or set the cup aside until it cools down.

Morning coffee is a welcoming opportunity to slowly sip and savor morning itself, to give ourselves a moment -- brief or prolonged -- to wake up, along with the day, calmly.

There are times, she mused, when shoes were vastly overrated, such as when one was splashing through the surf.

It wasn't an earthshaking, life-changing thought, but those weren't what was ambling through her head right now.

Before, during, after -- a good storm on the coast is well worth finding a spot to watch it from.

Brooding clouds overhead do their best to block the sun, but eventually, as the storm wanes, light breaks through and shimmers across the surface of the sea.

The power of nature is awe inspiring. How often do we take time to look?

The view from above, the view from below, the view from in between -- we gain perspective from every step we take.

As we move from one spot to another, we see things that were hidden from sight before. If we refused to budge, we wouldn't know they were there.

She did not run from the rain but welcomed it, because she knew how infrequently, how rarely and yet how blessedly, it enriched and healed the land.

Some gifts, she mused, are meant to be savored -- revered and treasured deliberately, quietly, with grace and the deepest of gratitude.

And in such a manner, she did.

Initially, what she wanted to find was a seer, an oracle or a prophetess who could impart to her teachings of truth. For that reason she traveled to where she thought this person could be.

But in the course of the journey, she realized that what she was searching for was not someone to TELL her the truth, but the truth itself.

And that she could find by seeking.

Often while traveling we're in some sort of hurry to get there. Being on the road isn't particularly relaxing.

But when we stop -- generally for those bathroom breaks -- it's an opportunity to take a stroll and be pleasantly surprised by our surroundings.

This is a view we encountered in an out of the way, almost hidden, you just about miss it, rest stop in Oregon.

There were so many things to think about, but they had to be curated.

Otherwise, she would use this precious time of silence to focus on things that didn't matter, items of "news" or current events to mentally grumble over, as opposed to deeply focusing and thinking upon those introspections within her heart, ones that were calling out to be heard.

It was easy, too easy. to carry about bitterness and anger, resentment and fear within her -- there was so much to be angry and bitter about.

But she felt in her heart, sensed it in her steps that these emotions caused her to be clumsy, awkward, unable to stand and move with strength.

The grace and freedom she sought did not live in hatred.

In the same way that the reflection in a still, calm lake is broken with ripples when we toss a stone in it, so also are our own reflections affected by noise or interruptions.

Perhaps we can make it to a silent place like this. But when we can't, it's worth seeking out stillness, anywhere, in which to pursue our thoughts.
