So Tusky development is picking up! We have a new social person so community communication should be better, we have a version 25 out and the pace of development has been speeding up lately.

The new version's big feature is it supports the server translation feature; if translation works for you on the web app but doesn't work for you in Tusky 25, we'd be curious to know about it.

If you're interested in contributing to Tusky development (it's Kotlin, which is like Java with fewer semicolons and more closures) the best way to make contact with the development community is to join the Matrix/Element linked in our Github README.

This week we had the regular Team meeting, and among a lot of good news (new team members, new release coming soon, huge refactorings being done) we also found some areas where we could need some help ->

The newest nightly crashes on Android 14 when sending a new post. I already fixed the problem, but now Google Play blocks the app update. I hope this is resolved soon, sorry for the inconvenience & thanks for testing Tusky!

Tusky is looking for contributors!

The team has lost a few contributors this year for various reasons, and we need your help building a kick-ass Mastodon app!

While we would also appreciate more technical contributors, we are specifically looking for:

  • a person who can manage or help with our social account
  • a project manager who can help us draft a Code of Conduct

Please help us spread the word 😊

Note re: Tusky 24: Last year I was trying to contribute to Tusky by implementing one small, standalone feature per release (other team members do much more! but I'm still unsteady with Android dev). At the START of 2023, I decided my project was going to be upgrading our video player. This turned into a HUGE project that took literally all year and a lot of additional work by Nik Clayton but it's in now! Tusky now uses MODERN ANDROID VIDEO instead of ANCIENT ANDROID VIDEO https://mastodon.social/@Tusky/111529747149677651

I’m sorry but the interface for adding alt text (image descriptions, which all images should have) on mobile is terrible in most apps. Here is tumblr and the Mastodon app. 👎

(please do not reply telling me to use desktop, I do, it’s great, or with other work-around suggestions. I just posted the names of 30 insects using OCR and a host of other tools— I’m the queen of work-arounds! the point here is that “accessibility” shouldn’t be an afterthought!)

Mastodons mobile app has you type in just one line at the bottom of the image.

@futurebird Yet another reason to use : image caption UI is great.

Things that have improved my Mastodon experience:

  • Following hashtags important to me. You can follow a hashtag in the desktop client for Mastodon by first hitting the hashtag, then pressing the "follow hashtag" button on the top of the resulting page.

  • Following people whose posts I kept seeming to miss even though I was following them. If you follow them, go to their profile and hit the bell icon to get alerts when they post.

Oleksii,

@glightly
mobile app has a button to start following the hashtag.

Second cool fact: tusky is suitable for having many accounts 👍

In the Mastodon client, I really enjoy turning off:

  • Account Preferences > Timelines > Download media previews
  • Preferences > Show link previews in timelines

This can save bandwidth when I'm out and about on mobile data.

It also means that if I'm looking at my phone in the dark with a black theme, I don't get zapped in the eyes by bright photos. I just see the media descriptions, when people are kind enough to add those; my night vision is preserved.

Keep up the good work @Tusky!

So after all this kerfuffle, I wanted to try the app out. First impressions is it's very clean, I like the UI. I really like the trending tags page. My astigmatism doesn't really like the white text in dark mode so I might not be able to continue using it.

The app I currently use is fedilab. I didn't use tusky at first because the Google Play rating wasn't great. But after reading through it, it seems to be people rating their experience of mastodon as a whole rather than the app. So the 3.5star rating seems very harsh with that in mind.

I really like the UI. I'm gonna use it for longer to get more of a feel. It definitely feels pretty plug and play. Or as plug and play as the fediverse can be.

This feat that I've learned yesterday ( how old were you when you find out that we can browse directly through a user's multimedia in @Tusky ?) its soooo rewarding. Ahhhhhh.

And I'm such an illiterate digital grandpah!

Response to Nik Clayton

Our OpenCollective policy has always been that we will use our budget to enable contributors who would otherwise not be able to contribute. In one case, this meant that there was no publicly visible work, because the contributor did not manage to get it into a usable form, despite us helping them as much as possible. We recognize that we could be more transparent with our expense policy, and we will work on improving it.

The Tusky team is bigger than ever, but two more known faces are stepping back.

Hi everyone, maloki here. Conny announced his resignation to our matrix channel last night, and this has some people worried. We've been working on this hand over for months, as both him and I are stepping back.

We've now made an official update on our Open Collective , where you can also support the team going forward!

Thank you for all your thoughts and support.

Gikk igjennom og oversatte de nye tingene i @Tusky appen, hvis noen andre har lyst til å bli med, og noen av oversettelsene føles krøklete ut i appen er flere øyne alltid fint å ha :)

Day 1: Trending hashtags

Mastodon servers can report information about the hashtags that are trending, and #Tusky now shows this information for you. It's accessible from the left-hand navigation menu, and you can also add it as a dedicated tab.

I've attached a screenshot so you can see what it's like.

The work was done by @knossos in https://github.com/tuskyapp/Tusky/pull/3149

nikclayton,
@nikclayton@mastodon.social avatar

Day 10: Accessibility improvements

We made a number of changes in 22.0 to improve accessibility

Some users reported that the design of the "Load more" break made it difficult to spot amongst other posts in a timeline.

@lakoja updated the design so that it is more visually distinctive in https://github.com/tuskyapp/Tusky/pull/3376.

The swipe-to-refresh gesture is not always accessible to assistive devices. I added an accessible "Refresh" menu entry as an alternative in https://github.com/tuskyapp/Tusky/pull/3121.

nikclayton,
@nikclayton@mastodon.social avatar

Day 9: Account headers

In 21 you could view an account and tap the avatar picture to view it full screen.

But you couldn't do that with the account's header image. Now you can.

KWierso (https://github.com/KWierso) noticed this and suggested it should be fixed, and @Tak made the change in https://github.com/tuskyapp/Tusky/pull/3274.

It was also possible for an account's header image to obscure the buttons at the top of the page. I fixed that in https://github.com/tuskyapp/Tusky/pull/3272.

nikclayton,
@nikclayton@mastodon.social avatar

Day 11: Show post statistics in the timeline

22.0 can now show the number of replies, boosts, and favourites posts have on the main timeline.

Previously this information was only available if you tapped on the post.

This is off by default, and enabled with "Preferences > Show post statistics in timeline".

Grigorii Ioffe (https://github.com/zikasak) did this and made their first contribution to Tusky, in https://github.com/tuskyapp/Tusky/pull/3413
