One of the key facts here keeps getting sidestepped by a mixture of scam marketing and common language usage out there.

LLMs don't sometimes make shit up, they always make shit up.

That's what an LLM is: a piece of software that makes up plausible sounding shit.

What's impressive about this is the extent of improvement in the plausibility.

What's horrifying about it is the extent to which so many people don't care to distinguish between plausibility and correctness.

aadriasola,
@aadriasola@ruby.social avatar

@GeePawHill
at best an LLM is an information retrieval from a kind-of-compressed training dataset

the "plausible" is a side effect, the "hallucinate" is the mechanism (make up shit from previous data)

it does produce contextually located information.. that is not creativity, it can give loco information by tweaking a parameter to cast a wobblier net around words. gibberish maker with plausible clauses because the training data has information (it also can be junk)

Whether you are a sports fan or not, you should watch the 3 point contest tonight between the best Men's NBA 3 point shooter (Steph Curry) and the best Women's NBA 3 point shooter (Sabrina Ionescu).

https://hachyderm.io/@mekkaokereke/111870442573693027

Steph is the best 3 point shooter in history, and Sabrina legitimately might beat him tonight.

🤔 Hey, if it works to blame Taylor Swift for Kansas City losing football games, then I don't see why I can't apply this tactic to my life too? Lemme try it:

I spilled the milk pouring my kids' cereal this morning, and I just want to say that this is 100% my wife's fault. No, she wasn't in the kitchen or anywhere near where the incident happened, but it's clear that my head wasn't in the game. This has to be because I'm enjoying my relationship too much.

One place we lost our way was naming places on this continent "New Something". This is another England, another France, another Spain, another Sweden, we thought. We should bring the same animals and crops from there to here; peel off the surface of home and lay it over this new place, crushing what was underneath.

aadriasola,

@evan Aotearoa bad?

aadriasola,
@aadriasola@ruby.social avatar

@evan new zealand, its called aotearoa , usually places prefiixed with New had a local name before

aadriasola,
@aadriasola@ruby.social avatar

@evan its not bad at all, just wondering why the local names should be unused in favor of York which already is in England, never mind

    AI is being used to remove responsibility of human parties over actions that kill maim disable isolate marginalize torment harass other humans. It was the AI they will claim, but it is the tool chosen by humans, used to achieve goals set by humans. It should not be discussed as decisions maker

    This whole ordeal with tracks against my past dealings with . You could get the AI 90% of the way to doing the job you wanted it to do, but attempts to close the last 10% would result in the project moving backward.

    Because of this, we could never take a human off of closely babysitting the AI's decisions, which didn't actually save us much time. It just changed the nature of the work for the human.

    If we went all in and and tried to close the final 10% to make the AI self-sufficient, the whole thing would go haywire to the point of being unusable.

    So at least for me, OpenAI imploding as soon as they could see the promised land is totally on brand for AI in general. 😂

    What is the worst lyric from a Rush song? I vote for:

    “Some world-views are spacious but some are merely spaced?”

    huh?

    It doesn’t help I thought he said “some are merely space?” But “spaced” is only marginally more intelligible. What on earth is a “spacious world view” That this is in a song complaining about “bad design” makes it worse.

    Really the whole set of lyrics is dubious. But imprinted forever in my mind. There is nothing quite like a Rush song. Or Geddy’s voice.

    There's lots of noise in SF about homeless people "refusing shelter" and "They want to live in tents!" And that we should force them to accept the shelter against their own will, "for their own good!" Many SF folks rationalize their desire to not see homeless people, by convincing ourselves that refusing shelter is an irrational behaviour, and that we know better.

    We don't consider the fact that people might be refusing shelter when that shelter is worse than a tent.

    The people that Bernie Madoff stole from, got most of their money back. ~90% at this point. 👍🏿

    https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-announces-total-distribution-over-4-billion-victims-madoff-ponzi-scheme#

    Because Madoff stole from mostly rich, mostly white people, ultra high net worth individuals, financial institutions. US society makes sure that rich folk are made whole, have loans forgiven (Eg PPP), etc.

    But the people that SBF stole from are unlikely to ever get their money back. Because they were disproportionately Black, low net worth individuals. AKA, normal people.
