One of the reasons I've been subscribed to vimeo for maybe a decade now, was that it never did the automatic copyright filtering for my fpv videos like youtube.

Now it's been properly enshittified with a filter that doesn't work, so finally allows me to not renew my sub. Good job, Vimeo!

@jimmac Oh ffs. Why can’t they just host bloody videos :(

Today in Western societies you can say anything but not what undermines the founding pillars of neoliberal oligarchic power. If you do so then you become an enemy.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@pafurijaz This. All protest is welcome as long as it can be commodified and doesn’t actually threaten the status quo.

@jmeowmeow @raganwald Yep :) And while it’ll happily serve you a static site from 1993 (as it should, being a web server, after all), the most important aspect is that it will hopefully enable a peer-to-peer web of Small Web places people can use to both be public (should they wish) and be private (actually private), e.g., see https://ar.al/2023/02/20/end-to-end-encrypted-kitten-chat/

And, eventually, set these places up in ~10 seconds without technical knowledge. (https://codeberg.org/domain/app) :) 💕

I believe many execs (& many of their enablers) are evil & diabolical, & they only care about their bottom line, esp. , , ...:

"Paul Graham wrote an essay in 2010 about how the best founders are naughty because they break the rules.

Then he has an interesting anecdote about Sam Altman...

Interesting lens through which to view why OpenAI keeps showing up in the news for doing obviously bad things."

@KimPerales Alt text:

  1. Naughtiness
    Though the most successful founders are usually good people, they tend to have a piratical gleam in their eye. They're not Goody Two-Shoes type good. Morally, they care about getting the big questions right, but not about observing proprieties. That's why I'd use the word naughty rather than evil. They delight in breaking rules, but not rules that matter. This quality may be redundant though; it may be implied by imagination. (1/2)

Sam Altman of Loopt is one of the most successful alumni, so we asked him what question we could put on the Y Combinator application that would help us discover more people like him. He said to ask about a time when they'd hacked something to their advantage-hacked in the sense of beating the system, not breaking into computers. It has become one of the questions we pay most attention to when judging applications. (2/2)

:kitten: Kitten’s interactive shell (REPL) now saves session history scoped to your app so it will still be there when you next serve the same app.

https://codeberg.org/kitten/app#kitten-s-interactive-shell

I think I’m done with the REPL feature now.

Going to take a little break, step away from the computer, and make a plan for the next week of work on Kitten and Domain¹.

If the use of civilians as human shields is a war crime, then it's a war crime for both.

Can we agree that Israel should be held to a higher standard?

@StableGeniusLib Holding Israel accountable for its actions? Sounds antisemitic to me.

@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

Folks who might be looking to move from Windows to Linux: another option, if it’s financially feasible for you and you don’t want to mess with installing Linux, is to sell your Windows machine and buy a Linux one.

Yep, they exist.

Folks like @starlabs in the UK, @tuxedocomputers in the EU, and @system76 in the US sell Linux machines that just work out of the box.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@AstaMcCarthy @mauricepinzon @starlabs @tuxedocomputers @system76 Unless I’m missing something, frame.work doesn’t come with Linux pre-installed and running (it only does that for Windows). You can install Linux yourself on the DIY model so it’s more for enthusiasts.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@pthane @starlabs @tuxedocomputers @system76 @tanquist Yeah. Sadly, the HDMI out on mine never worked properly.

@alx I’m sure some folks would disagree but I really think Fedora Silverblue is the best distribution right now (it’s what I use myself):

Additional bonus: you never have to worry about updates. They just work.

“In one of those moments that you can’t believe is not satire, Antony Blinken met with Arab-American leaders and warned them that if Palestine got statehood, the US would defund the United Nations and potentially the World Food Program, plunging the developing world into starvation. It wasn’t enough for these fascists to starve innocents in Palestine, they’re now threatening to do it across the world. They would really rather kill millions more than stop doing genocide.”
