Reminder: Abusive parents exist and that sometimes includes mothers. You are under no obligation to honor abusive parents, and you don't deserve to feel any shame or guilt about it. Abuse is never the victim's fault.

Hopefully this day will not be too painful, sad, or uncomfortable. You deserve a nice quiet, peaceful day too.

Since it comes up with some frequency on autistic social media, I wanted to share my experience with noise cancelling headphones as an noise sensitive autistic person with auditory processing issues. As always, this is just my experience.

I tried writing it for a Mastodon post, but it got way to long... so I ended up dumping it on my blog instead.

If you have any questions etc. do feel free to share.

How are you with animals?

I tend to throw off the wrong vibe for people, but get along with even the iffy animals. Dogs that don't like most people warm to me.

Just wondering how much of that is autism and how much me. My dad hates animals.

I've been feeling a little tired and overstimulated over the last few days and I've been trying to find a way to decompress. It's quietly hilarious to me that simply sitting on the couch with a blanket over my head seems to be quite effective.

Yesterday was my 1 year AuDHD anniversary!

1 year since the most life-changing realization ever. My resting heart rate dropped by ~10 points after I figured it out.

Knowing this about myself has given me so much peace & confidence. It's given me even more compassion for myself and others. I advocate for my needs now, and I have better boundaries.

Every day I marvel at how amazing we ND folks are, and how much we bring to the world.

I so appreciate this community!

Hey everyone, I thought this would be a great place to ask this question…

I’m studying at uni to become a counsellor, coming to the end of year so we’ve decided to do topics we’d love to know more about. I have to make a leaflet like you’d find in a GP surgery with facts about neurodivergence (it’s cool, I picked the topic with me being autistic) for others to learn from.

I have tonnes of great stuff to include but wanted to ask you guys for any ideas you might have?

Me, feeling well rested and in a good mood: I don't know, it's hard for me to see myself being autistic. I don't feel like I've run into much difficulty lately, and my ADHD has been more noticeable. Maybe I'm not really autistic, and maybe I'm just an ADHDer? What do you think about all this, screening test?

Screening test for Autism: congratulations, you got a perfect score! You are extremely autistic!

https://www.newportinstitute.com/resources/mental-health/echoism/ - A friend of mine was telling me about this word today. I did a google search and stumbled across this, and holy shit did I cry while reading this. The 12 signs mentioned, most of them I can relate to. I don't speak for everyone else, but, this helps explain a number of things for me personally. I don't know if this will help anyone, but, wanted to share this...

Please be super careful using public wi-fi, even with a VPN. Zero day in existence for over 20 YEARS was announced impacting VPN use with regards to rogue or compromised DHCP servers on the LAN, which allows redirection of VPN traffic. If you can avoid public network use (i.e. using a cell service/hotspot instead of a public wifi network in a cafe, store, etc.), just avoid it. https://arstechnica.com/security/2024/05/novel-attack-against-virtually-all-vpn-apps-neuters-their-entire-purpose/?comments=1&comments-page=1

WE’RE GETTING A NEW CAT!

Internet, please bid a warm welcome to Miss Saison du Pris, late of Boone County Animal Care and Control and arriving at Beercats Manor likely tomorrow after some last-minute routine tests.

The last picture on the right may well be the moment I became smitten.

Ginger cat next to a water and food bowl.
Ginger cat rubbing up against an enclosure door just being adorable.

Anyone else have a lifetime of people telling you that you need to walk faster/stop lagging behind?

Idk if this is ND specific even, but I had to remind myself that I can just walk normally when on my own. Apparently walking pace is a mask for me. 🤷🏽

Hi friends,

The http://alt-text.org alt text library project needs a new leader, because I have brain cancer.

I would like to connect with the #accessibility dev community, something I have never figured out, probably in part for neurodivergence reasons. I want to hand the project off to a team or a leader if anyone is willing to take it over.

Github: https://github.com/alt-text-org

Boosts appreciated

Nothing makes sense any more. It is $1050/mo for a campsite with an electric hookup and $550/mo for non-subsidized government housing in a converted hotel room with kitchen, tub/shower, and queen bed.

My only guess is that they are earning over $500/mo datamining me through the "free" wifi.

I believe that autistic burnout is something that other people do to us rather than something we do to ourselves.

It's not simply that we mask too much or work too hard; society requires us to do those things. The choice is not ours.

Those are not the only things that cause burnout. Bigotry and abuse from others also causes burnout. Constant sensory Hell also causes burnout. Anything that keeps us out of equilibrium causes burnout.

I tried being kind to myself and allowing myself to be half an hour late to work, as I was tired and still overwhelmed from yesterday. It didn't work out though as just as I arrived at work I had a big migraine and had to come home. Migraines are so strongly linked to overwhelm. It's like they're just another release valve for not coping with sensory input.

theaardvark, to Autism
@theaardvark@mastodon.me.uk avatar

How does everyone know how, when and how much they're masking?
As a late-diagnosed , I struggle to differentiate between "me but masking" and "me but in a diff situation".
Now that I know I'm autistic, I even miss the person I used to be in some situations before I knew.
I used to call myself a "social chameleon" - I just changed automatically to suit the circumstances.
But who actually am I and what is just a mask?

One of the stray cats I feed is warming up to me. He's sooo cute. He's the most energetic cat I've ever meet. He never walks, always runs. And he is always meowing. You can't get a word in when he's around!

He is now showing me he enjoys my company, not just the fact that I feed him. He even let me hold him peacefully a couple times 💖

I have named him Orange Boy 😻

"Self-diagnosis is a valid form of identification and is often the only accessible diagnostic avenue for many marginalized people."

Wow, I really didn't expect to see this acknowledged in this magazine.

I feel like the word "treatment" was used on the cover intentionally to give the magazine broader appeal. The fact that the first handful of articles discuss neurodiversity and neurodivergence as a natural form of human diversity is incredibly satisfying and gives me hope. It's like this magazine was designed to educate people who don't know anything about neurodivergence.
