Just found a new (to me) psychology phrase: "pluralistic ignorance". It refers to people holding one view but mistakenly assuming that the majority of others hold a different view, so they keep quiet. Very relevant for climate change action, where lots want action but think they're in the minority.

Without looking it up, what do think the distance of the Earth from the Moon is? Use a “O” and a “o” character to show it to scale, e.g.

O o

(this is not the correct answer!)

Swedish mathematician Niels Fabian Helge von Koch was born #OTD in 1870.

He established results in number theory, including one that relates the Riemann hypothesis to the asymptotic distribution of prime numbers. But he is probably best known for what we call the "Koch Curve" – one of the first examples of a fractal.

The animated gif has a white background. It begins with a horizontal light blue line. Then a light blue equilateral triangle appears above the middle third. In the next step. Each of the four remaining segments sprouts its own equilateral triangle, and so on until the result is a complicated curve that resembles part of a snowflake.

Here's today's press release for JAXA's SLIM lunar landing!

TL;DR:

Pinpoint site identification was crazily successful.

We were lowering into position, detecting boulders like a champ.

THEN ONE OF THE ENGINES DROPPED OFF.

(I kid you not)

(we don't know why yet)

(maybe space pirates)

But we still soft-landed on 1 engine.

(TAKE THAT SPACE PIRATES!)

but on our head.

Strangely, might not be a big deal once the Sun moves round to the other side of the spacecraft.
