Pro tip: projects are developed by Genuine Real Humans! Before telling tens of thousands of people something “absolutely sucks,” you could, idk, talk to those humans!

I’m not saying you have to fix it yourself (though PRs are welcome…) or even report an issue! Just, like, talk to the people.

You’ll have a more interesting story to tell, at the very least. But you’ll also avoid sending undue abuse to the people behind the project based on your incendiary blog post/video title.

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

On the flip side, advice for projects: clickbait and incendiary posts are tiring & you don’t have to read/watch/etc. But sometimes there’s useful feedback layered in—just don't hyperfixate on it!

If someone in your project is open to reading/watching and summarizing the critique (and even turning some of it into issues), it can be a good way to be responsive while protecting your team's mental health.

And if I'm involved in your open source project, I'm happy to be that person!

Prediction:

-Threads incorporates to fediverse
-All content appearing on threads becomes property of Meta
-Masto posts appear on threads and become property of Meta
-Privacy ruined
-Fediverse ruined

Is there another possible direction this goes?

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

@Toastie I mean, my copyrighted content shared on my instance is still my copyrighted content, and if I don’t make a Threads account agreeing to Threads' T&C, they can’t legally just… revoke my rights. They would be in a world of lawsuits if they pulled that. So no, I don’t believe this is the direction it goes—and alarmism isn’t really helpful, here.

People wanna interact with their friends, and federation using open standards is literally the way to do that.

I feel like I post this every few months, but: is there a launcher for AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE to the latest Launcher, but lets me use a different search engine?

I love the stock launcher:

• At a Glance
• Combined app/web search
• Very little customizability because good defaults
• Smooth animations/integration w/Recents
• Ability to turn off Google Discover feed
• Simple gestures (⬇️ notifications, ⬆️ all apps)

ALL I want is instead of

If I want to make a nice map overlay (say, like you’d see when attending an event in an unfamiliar city…), are there good open editors that can like, plug into OpenStreetMap somehow? Ideally something you could load into GNOME Maps, but I’d be fine with a web embed or even just exporting as an image.

My current idea is to screenshot the area on a map and overlay in Inkscape, but there’s gotta be something better?

Of course Apple is going to support RCS, they literally have to as it’s the replacement for SMS and afaik required for 5G certification. They dragged their feet to try and pretend they weren’t interested, and the people who suffered most were their own customers who got a crap experience.

This is how Apple weaponizes their own users.

But hey, I guess it is one less barrier for me ever considering using an iPhone? 🤷‍♂️ Now let’s do sideloading.

Working on a little thing for Home Assistant that I hope to submit to Flathub soon. Not really all that special or complex, but I don't love how PWAs are handled by any browser on Linux, and I want to eventually add some more interesting functionality to the header to make it feel even more native... but this is a start.

Android's quick settings is their systray, and carries many of the same problems—especially when app developers, including Google, use the space as a place to stuff yet-another-app-launcher.

It looks like Fedora 39 torrents are live a bit early. 👀 It seems like a good choice for my father-in-law's recently-liberated EOL Chromebook!

After downloading, I've already seeded to a 1:1 ratio; if you have some spare bandwidth, you can join in, too!

PSA: If you're using Zigbee with Home Assistant and find a good deal on eBay for OSRAM A19/A60 bulbs, RUN FAR AWAY!

It turns out these lights/their firmware are trash and will just go offline constantly when too many other devices are routed through them (you know, the whole point of Zigbee bulbs with built-in routing). There's a reason sellers are trying to get rid of them in lots for as low as $2/bulb.

Remember when the entire reason for Google Chrome (and the reason for its name!) was that it was supposed to be an extremely minimal view into the web, not bloated with a bunch of unnecessary UI chrome?

I'm sick of web browsers trying to become entire operating systems stuffed full of functionality that I don't want. Thankfully I've been using GNOME Web which is pleasantly minimal, and Firefox which has avoided this for the most part.

People who know things about USB-C Power Delivery… how much could an OS know about the connected charger?

Inspired by https://toot.cafe/@dotproto/111860867592693300, I wonder if GNOME could automatically use Power Saver if the connected charger couldn’t keep up with the laptop’s power demands. 🤔

I guess this could probably be implemented today by noting if the battery is not increasing when connected to power?

Pretty wild to me that the mobile platform that has majority market share in the US, doesn’t allow users to install apps from outside of their own tightly-controlled store, requires all purchases to be served through that store with a platform fee, doesn’t allow users to sideload their own apps, doesn’t allow entire categories of apps like browser engines and game streaming, and doesn’t even allow users to set their own preferred apps in many cases is not a monopoly… but Android somehow is??

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

I’m not about to defend Google’s business model or dealings. But like… I can and do use an alternative app store on Android. I install whatever browser I want. I can and do replace the default apps, up to and including the home screen. Like, if I don’t want to use Google stuff, I don’t have to. I can even unlock the bootloader using a built-in feature and install a whole-ass OS.

But Epic—one of the most anticompetitive companies in gaming—has convinced a jury that’s anticompetitive??

I've started testing the (hidden) light style in GNOME Shell, and I figured out the main thing that bothers me. This first version is more like an inverted style than following the existing GNOME/Adwaita conventions for raised elements.

Give a thumbs-up reaction on the issue if it affects you, but please don't spam the comments.

Twitter had (has?) a feature where you could coauthor a post. It was pretty cool because you could, e.g.

• Co-announce an engagement/marriage/whatev
• Do some brand partnership thing
• Share a photo of you & a friend in one post

As far as I know, it was treated like any other post from either author; if you followed one, you’d see it in your timeline. One would draft and “invite” the other who could approve it.

I wonder if there’s a place and technical mechanism for that in the Fediverse?

Wake me up when Apple supports RCS, simple sideloading of apps, and setting all my default apps to the ones I actually want to use.

While we're dreaming, an unlockable bootloader so I can actually dictate what software runs on my phone would be nice (lol).

I own the domain https://flatpak.app and have been hosting an experiment there for a while: short URLs for Flatpak apps.

First, a caveat: I know why Flatpak and Flathub don’t mess with short IDs and have chosen RDNN! And I mostly agree with it. Buuuut…

Is there some value in having a link to:

flatpak.app/dippi

…instead of:

flathub.org/apps/com.github.cassidyjames.dippi?

Also, you can treat it like a search, as non-exact URLs will redirect to a search on Flathub.
