For all the talk about how “small towns are friendlier” it sure does suck that one of my neighbours has a floor fan I bought via Amazon. No point in asking because they don’t really like me due to my non-obsessive behaviour over my lawn. Cutting the lawn once a week is not enough apparently.

Courier says “package handed to resident” but Amazon has refunded me.

cxj,
@cxj@phpc.social avatar

@grmpyprogrammer I’ve always found people to be friendlier in larger cities than small towns or suburban areas.

AI errors are hard for us to see.

“…the hardest kinds of errors to spot. They couldn’t be harder for a human to detect if they were specifically designed to go undetected. The human in the loop isn’t just being asked to spot mistakes — they’re being actively deceived. The AI isn’t merely wrong, it’s constructing a subtle ‘what’s wrong with this picture’-style puzzle.”

@davidaugust Exactly right. Current LLM / “AI” software by design must attempt to deceive or it would be mostly useless.

In a city called The Dalles, in Oregon, USA, local people were worried that Google’s water use was soaring. As is so often the case, the city officials, who had given Google hundreds of millions in tax breaks, had no intention of letting anyone know how much water Google was using. It was up to a local paper, The Oregonian, to try and find out. They were forced to bring a case to court. City officials were ordered by Google to claim that Google’s use of scarce pubic water was a “trade secret”.

cxj,

@ramsey Yeah. I almost never want to do the other thing. Cmd/Ctl V should paste and “match”* style.

*I further contend it’s not matching the recipient document’s style so much as the paste-op leaving it the hell alone.

Oh no. Oh no oh no. This will not end well for software in general. We've never before had an "un-leap" skipped second and even the occasional leap seconds in the past where they weren't new have caused us a lot of problems. Seconds that don't exist will make something go haywire, I'm sure.

Everybody get out and push?

@baldur It’s good but for a writer who is so experienced and has such a high opinion of himself, it’s also about 200% too long. There’s a lot of repetitive material. Writing is a developable skill; so is succinctness.

Boeing is a disgrace. Any company that chooses profits over safety should not be allowed to build planes. Also, did they just murder a whistleblower?!

@afilina It sure looks like someone murdered a whistleblower. I feel it’s more likely some investor did so than Boeing, but am not giving the company a free pass yet.
