    1/22: Have you ever scrapped a written character? Why?

    I... don't think so.

    You see, I'm a pantser. Sometimes, people wander into my stories and I have no idea why.

    Writer Brain often makes sense of them later on. One example is Madu, the grumpy shaman in my Winds and Pillars series. She just wandered in and supported South.

    And then, she became a force of nature for West. grins

    I pants. My first novel, I wrote a character who was a sports teacher at the MC's high school. The teacher was supposed to appear in one scene, in one book, and her work is done.

    Then she reappeared in the next book. And became a lot more important to the story.

    I need your help . One of the classes I'm taking at the graduate level this semester is Religion & Science Fiction. I read more fantasy, and would like to do my research paper on something that's not obvious (like ST/BS5/Matrix/etc.) & I'd love to use more modern sf rather than the golden age classics.

    Anyone have any interesting ideas for my research paper on regarding the intersection of religion and science fiction?

    The first that comes to mind is The Nine Billion Names Of God by Arthur C Clarke, but I think that's Golden Age.

    Lord Of Light by Rofer Zelazny probably is, too.

    1. https://www.behindthename.com when I want a name that means something.

    2. look up Ye Olde Words online when I want a name that means something else.

    3. look up words in languages that often get swamped by English (eg Scottish words) when I want a name that means something else.

    4. use the name of a friend when I want a name to mean something else.

    5. a punne, or play on words.

    Neither of them organised it, but my teenage superhero MC and one antagonist did end up at a party together.

    It looked like gunshots, a burning car, and a slightly-scorched and half-drowned supervillain in handcuffs.

    Am I the only one who feels like still using employment rate as a metric for a healthy economy is basically just gaslighting at this point?

    Employment used to mean you had a good chance of affording a home, maybe two kids, and potentially even on just a single income. Now you can have a full time job and still need food stamps or a side job just to pay bills.

    Then of course, because salaries are so low relative to the cost of living, it makes employment numbers look even better because people who wouldn't have been forced to work now are. You have households where both parents have full time jobs, people with disabilities forced to work because they can't cover bills, students dropping out of college because it's now unaffordable.

    Then some goober economist comes on TV and goes "well, unemployment is at record lows so obviously everything is fine"

    In the 90's, a full grown man who was pretending to be a doctor, wrote a book called Men Are From Mars, and Women Are From Venus. The book simply stated that women are emotional, and men are rational, while writing about his downright abusive irrational treatment of his own wife, and somehow this was a best seller.

    My wife is disabled. Together, we have raised a child, a lovely young man.

    I am also a writer.

    I also worked full time at a non-writing job until early retirement in 2019.

    Yes, I could have written more if I was a selfish arsehole who left them to fend for themselves.

    I'm not able to do that. My writing is not more important than them.
