He/him. #SRE, systems architect, all around #ops kinda person. This is my 3rd or 4th Eternal September. (My first time as cattle, though.) I miss Diaspora*.

Even though I don't work in #embedded, once upon a time I #hacked Tivos, then helped make #Linux work on #WinCE #PDAs, and I was even there for the early days of #AOSP.

#IRC is better than #Discord.

Recently I've started growing #cannabis and experimenting with #hydroponics, so expect pictures of plants and occasional 420-influenced posts

Awake.

I'm up early, woke up about 1 AM, tried to fall back asleep, but gave up on that around 230. I'll probably need to nap in the afternoon.

Looking forward to seeing Ginza this morning. I think I'll do again like yesterday, after she comes in for breakfast and starts eating, I'll close the doors. The basic idea now is to do the sit and chats almost completely indoors. I hope that will help with trying to teach her use of a litterbox.

I'll certainly again show her this morning

dis,

@IzabelaKaramia
She sounds awesome! I wonder if she's pregnant.. (Our first rescue was, and it made her totally friendly. 7 kittens are the most fun ever but woo 🦨. She converted to indoor only without any concern, but that was where her kittens were. A super sweet girl but not the most clever cat we've had.)
For the box, puppy pads with the attractant smell, placed underneath might help. If she's not going inappropriately she might just be an outside goer. Our guy figured out the box during his quarantine (no choice) but he peed in the tub. He since stopped that, but still is willing to go out in a hurricane most days instead of using a box. He also does softpaws when he plays but his big wild guy jaws are still stronger than he knows so he sometimes bites a bit.
Pictured stealing his favorite treat, enough ice water to get brain freeze twice.

Awake.

Slept fairly well but even though I've already had decaf tea and a banana, washed and smoothed face, changed into clothes, my brain is still dead in the water.

Guess it be Friday.

Still very glad I quit caffeine. I feel it's helped smooth out my daily cycle and it's helping me to sleep better at night

Wonder if Ginza is going to spring more new surprises on me today? It's been a week full of amazement from her so far.

dis,

@IzabelaKaramia ours didn't realize we had control of doors initially. Made him super patient while he sat waiting for the "random" opening and closing to let him through. Took a while for him to catch on that we could do it at will, and longer to realize it wouldn't happen without us.

@IzabelaKaramia feral cats are the best. And weirdest. Wait till he learns what names are! Ours used to get excited and look at whatever cat we named. And double hop dance excited to hear his own name.

Okay folks, a question from a newbie with just enough knowledge to be dangerous to himself.

If I wanted to print a plug for a hydroponics system, I know that FDM prints can harbour bacterias by default. Is it enough to use an acrylic paint sealer? Or should I get some UV resin, dunk the print into it and cure it?

dis,

@flameeyes another vote for 2 part epoxy, or lacquer. (Lacquer is easier to make food safe but harder to make durable. End use is important.)

dis, to hotsauce

I also made the first batch of scotch bonnet fish pepper peach hot sauce. And the second, with carrots I forgot on the first one.
Super easy, just peach, onion, a million peppers and some brine. Sits and waits a month or so, then blend boil and eat.

I am tempted to try, openKylin OS.

For those who do not know, Kylin, is the distro made by China's Government. In recent years, Ubuntu Kylin was developed as a calibration.

opneKylin is, to my knowledge, allegedly the first "independent" open source copy of Kylin with the source code viewable to the public.

https://www.openkylin.top/downloads/os-en.html

The folks over at "Its FOSS" wrote up a short review about them too.

@preslavrachev have you checked awesome selfhosted yet? https://awesome-selfhosted.net/tags/bookmarks-and-link-sharing.html

I can't give personal recommendations. I use bookmark managers as an eco friendly way to recycle bookmarks I should go back to but never ever do.

dis, to Discord

Here is today's reminder that is NOT a forum!

@turingpi I'm looking at you. (Nice to see you here though!)

Discord is directly hostile to users.

It is not
It is not archived.
It does not allow anonymous viewing.
It is not searchable, and neither is it indexed by external search engines.
Data is walled in and unexportable.

Bonus round: Chat is also NOT a forum!

Chat is a chronological firehose, good for temporally transient information, largely ungrouped. Forums are a topical tree, good for longer-lasting information grouped by subject.

If you would write it down in real life (including email) then use a forum.

If you would only say it out loud (in the hallway or on a call) then chat is perfectly fine.

And if you say it out loud while someone else writes it down, tell your assistant to use a forum.

dis, to grafana

Today's adventure in comes from . (Not a surprise, but this is why I run egress filters and dns in my clusters.)

I know not everyone agrees that is a dark pattern, but you might agree with me about this one after you see it documented:

> # -- Optional analytics configuration
> analytics: {}

Enlightening, isn't it? There are other empty blocks, but they are either fairly standard or are described elsewhere in the document.

If you are familiar with , you won't despair because you have the power of analytics.enabled: false. That works on the rest of this chart and is the standard way to en/disable things.

It doesn't work that way.

Let me save you some time with the terrible new code search. Here is the actual syntax:
"analytics.reporting_enabled: false"

This was caught by and enforced by an egress

dis, to fediverse

For I don't have specific follows, but a search tip for finding hashtags and people:
When you search, it only asks your local instance. To expand your fedi view, try searching on larger instances in a new window. When you find a person or post you like, paste the url into your local search box and your instance will go get it for you. Likes, follows, everything works.

veikus, to 3DPrinting

It was probably the one project I found a practical use for the MMU. Unfortunately, it proved itself pretty unreliable, and now it's living in a box. Maybe someone has had a better experience and wants to share their projects?

On a photo: letters for the split-flap display. Fun project, but it requires a lot of patience to align letters between 2 wheels (and I'm admittedly impatient).

@3dprinting

dis,

@veikus @3dprinting even gave up on the mmu. The marketing page for the new one says as much at the top:

> Since the release of the MMU2S (previous model), we’ve been collecting your feedback and started preparing something like an MMU2S+. However, at one point, we decided to completely [start over..]

So the rest of us are just suckers as far as that goes. I suspect everyone got one decent print out of it, which is a lot for the cost.

I sincerely hope Threads follows through with their plan to federate. It will give other Fediverse users a controlled pipeline to the zeitgeist.

By judiciously following Threaders here we’ll be able to have safe access to the people, news, and brands we could never convince to use Mastodon without having to submerse ourselves into the massive, undifferentiated flood of info over there.

This is a good thing, yes?

dis,

@leo
That is the first step of "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish"

We all thought that same thing when yahoo took over for private forums, and cheered while google divided up email to "save us" from spam, and (google again) thought it was absolutely amazing "do no evil" when they federated google talk with XMPP. (That one really stung. And it was exactly this situation: they connected their existing chat network to the existing largish federated one, and when they had enough of a user-base they defederated to destroy the open network. It worked. Gtalk people thought we just logged off..)

They can get the data for free by simply spinning a 'fake' instance and subscribing like mad. They can't get the users unless they change the to something it is not.

When an app asks for permissions, the OS should not only let you answer yes or no. Every category should have a "yes, but feed the app fake data" option.

Want my contacts for no reason? Have these generated fake ones! Wanna listen to my microphone? Here's random ambiance sounds! Location? I'm on a tiny 5x5m island!

Hell yeah! Put it all in your databases mfers!

Actively punishing services wins over boycotts any day. Didn't want that junk in the database? Don't ask for it!

dis,

@Nifflas

We've been fighting this one a while: https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/36912844

(In 2011, CyanogenMod added fake data support. Google eventually allowed some permissions to be rejected and everyone called it a win)
