I just had to update my numbers for a lecture, so here's your periodic reminder: Starlink is now 55% of ALL active satellites in orbit.

And given the recent news about that awful billionaire unilaterally deciding to cut of Starlink internet access to parts of the world whenever he wants to, this is extra important to share. Why did our governments effectively gift Low Earth Orbit to one awful dude? This is so bad.

So now that we've got good excess death numbers, it turns out they were higher than we thought. That we were actually undercounting deaths, not overcounting them to get the medical industry better paid etc like the anti COVID vax people were saying. And the excess deaths are lower where vaccination was higher, exactly the opposite you'd expect if it was the vax causing the deaths, another claim of the anti COVID vax crowd. but they seem to be right re lockdown policy being a net negative.

An entertaining and instructive map. Please note that on the eastern side of the Atlantic ocean what you call "Sour" beer is referred to as "bitter". A bit of a translation/usage issue!

In WW2, the movement of millions of American troops to Britain, known as the “friendly invasion,” brought to light stark differences concerning racial segregation. Many Britons struggled to understand or accept the institutionalized discrimination that Black soldiers faced in White America, leading to tensions between the two allied nations on the matter of civil rights.

The classic case of this was that several public houses in reacted to attempts to import segregation by putting up signs that they would serve black G.I.s only!

Legal experts respond that they already have special facilities for criminals who either need lots of security or are a threat to others. ‘

If the Republican Party responds to the Trump indictment solely by attacking courts and judges, and if its leaders continue to work to de-legitimize the legal system, I am not sure how we recover.

For a precedent, Americans don't even have to look beyond our hemisphere: Venezuela is an excellent example of state that slid into autocracy while an elected president repeatedly assaulted judges.

The risks to business of dealing with an unreliable and untrustworthy legal system will be factored into decisions about both investment and trade. The degrading of the credit rating of the is just the first sign of this. Late mediaeval and early modern history is littered with cases of autocrats who ran out of funds at critical times and lost control of the armies they had raised. Which is why both the Dutch and later the English survived as nations and then prospered !
