EDIT3: i'm going to close this to new submissions since they've slowed to a trickle now

new to mastodon? do you make cool shit? if you've got under 100 followers, reply to this with 1-4 images of stuff you've made and i will boost you to my 5.8k followers, because i want people who do creative work to find a place on mastodon

please note i will be spacing out boosts to not spam my followers too much

EDIT2: if you're a composer (or do similar non-visual work) you should probably drop a link to where people can listen to your work. maybe add cover art if you have any

EDIT: if i miss your post it's likely you're on an instance mine has muted, I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do about that

oh hey my games are on deep discount on itch.io, and we still need all the financial help we can get in order to stay housed and fed until we can get kitsune tails out next year so buying them would be a huge help: https://eniko.itch.io/

they're also on sale on steam: https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/15673/Kitsune_Games_Complete_Pack/

i love how anti-maskers are always like "do you think we should continue wearing masks forever?" when people talk about the dangers of covid, as if thats some kind of game-winning gotcha

well, the alternative to masking is catching covid 2-3 times a year, a disease which gives you cardiovascular damage, strokes, brain damage, nerve damage, diabetes, chronic fatigue, lung damage, and dementia. among many other things. and the risk of all of those goes up geometrically the more times you get infected

so, idk man, should we continue to wear masks for the foreseeable future? yes, because i think wearing a mask when out and about is a lot less harmful than any let alone all of those

*RV32I doesn't come with mul/div so hex only for now >_>

EDIT: for the non-followers finding this thread: i'm making a lisp to form the shell (and ultimately self-hosted compiler) for a RISC-V toy OS i wanna make

Proposal: stop saying stuff like "we're destroying the planet" and change it to "they're destroying the planet", to pivot away from self blame when most of us don't have the power to change things and definitely would if we could, and towards laying the blame squarely on the elites propping up the fossil fuel industry so we can focus our collective anger on those actually responsible

today in minecraft i get to go do some actual mining since i'm fresh outta diamonds and even lapis, and i'm so happy because at least it's not the fucking nether

in other news, twice now i've had to extract a villager who managed to make their way through my nether transport tunnels and decided to make a new life for themselves in my base >:|

It upsets me when people speculate despondently that we'll never get rid of covid now, that our chance has passed, when meanwhile we're not even trying for the lowest of low hanging fruit

For example, airplanes should be running their air filtration at max when boarding and deplaning. They don't. They have never done this throughout the pandemic. They can, there's no technical issue preventing them from doing this, they just don't, helping to spread covid variants internationally

Or schools. We've seen studies show that schools are a major vector for the spread of covid (and other airborne diseases!) We've also anecdotally seen many examples of schools that kept covid out completely, either through ventilation and filtration or testing and masking or some combination. Putting air filters in classrooms is dirt cheap compared to disabling students and sickening their households, but it's not even being looked at

They haven't even tried literally pushing a button and are telling us nothing can be done

Really feel like mastodon's design doesn't prioritize protecting users from the actions of a malicious admin enough. If the pitch is "if the admin tries to burn things down then you can move" then for that pitch to work it can't be that an admin can torch everything before you have time to react

Yes, they can always take the instance down immediately and in its entirety, but thats not what I'm talking about. But hey actually, if that happens there should still be a way to recover and move your account

EDIT: "make backups" is not a solution because the most valuable part of a social graph is people who follow you, and those cannot be backed up

Our stove top has touch controls. It's ridiculous. Ah yes, I will touch the glass top of my stove with my fingers while using it, thereby risking injury or at the very least having to put my finger on a greasy stove top. Because when people cook on a stove top, grease splatters out of hot pans all over. Who the fuck thought this was a good idea? For the love of god just give me some fucking knobs

You know what knobs are also good for? Going instantly from any setting to any other setting. With this touch interface bullshit if I wanna turn off one hob from the highest setting without turning off all hobs I have to plonk my finger down and wait for it to slowly cycle down from 9 to 0, going through all full and half digits on the way

If this is what a "luxury cooking experience" feels like I don't fucking want it

whoa no shit sherlock it's a statistical model that composes answers that are statistically probable, not factual. it's almost like all it does is put a bunch of words that look like an answer next to each other and has zero grasp of what a fact even is conceptually

So I made my arena allocator thing and that's cool and useful, I'll inevitably use it for something because avoiding garbage allocations in C# can be so dang hard

But I'm still thinking about it as a GC optimization structure. There's nothing that says an arena can't act like a normal GCed object that acts as an opaque container for other objects within so that the GC only has to look at the arena and not all of its contents. Doing this actually solves the issue I have with the arena allocator design in that clearing the arena makes all pointers to items within it stale references, which means any such references act as weak references, which is a blemish on the design

But there's nothing saying you can't just wait to free anything in the arena until your tracing GC has determined the arena is garbage, ie nothing has a reference to it (or its contents) anymore. This would make it work exactly like any other part of a tracing GC system

Can't relate to people who say bluesky is so much better than mastodon. Bluesky feels dead to me. Also one of the arguments I saw was that they had search and algorithms instead of hashtags, and this individual didn't wanna use hashtags

The thing about hashtags is that it makes discoverability opt-in. You decide if you want random word searching bastards to find your posts, which is important since 95% this is done by people looking to harass others

Anyway I wanna wish people luck on bluesky. They're not even out of private beta yet and the people in charge are already talking to press about their plans to add "monetizable value add"

I'm gonna stay here where I can control when I want everyone to be able to find what I say, and where a corporation won't try and carve chunks of functionality out to sell them back to me, a process that inevitably culminates in what happened to twitter and reddit when they can't squeeze enough blood from the stone anymore

"real name" policies are evidence that there are people in charge who have never moved to another country

you wanna know what my real name is? according to whomst, exactly? hell in the US various federal orgs couldn't even agree on what my name was supposed to be. no, scratch that, even the social security administration, internally, couldn't agree on what my name was and changed it like 4 times over a 6 year stay

curious about something. wanna see how big the community on mastodon is. are you a game developer? plz boost for reach

EDIT: i cannot prescribe that anyone is a gamedev or in what capacity. if you don't self identify as a gamedev, vote no, if you self identify as a professional gamedev even if you're doing it alongside a dayjob, pick the professional category. there are no wrong answers
