My produced this nice image, because today was totally clear sky and my solar panels were providing full power. It's funny how doing things at home is so clearly visible in power usage.

We released Quicktest v0.2.2! Quicktest is my little fun side-project to make automated testing of Linux distro installs easier and faster.

Here's a quick video of the new test which operates Calamares to test install Kubuntu 24.10 (daily live image) in a VM.

I can't get over how fast this is!

Sounds a lot like http://open.qa/ . I guess the major difference is in using semi vs quickemu?

Public service announcement. If you stat /proc/$pid/fd then stat->st_size/statx->stx_size will contain the number of open file descriptors for $pid.

> stat --format '%s' /proc/1/fd
167

etam,
@etam@im-in.space avatar

@brauner
I have bad feelings about it. Sure it works, but only because the "size" of directory in /proc happens to be the number of files inside. Try doing it on any other directory on a real filesystem and you get completely different result.

I'd stick to this:
ls -1 /proc/1/fd | wc -l

What's the best RSS/newsfeed/social reader for Linux?

I have moved completely to @feeeed on iOS and I'm looking for something like that on Linux. Been using Miniflux for a long time but I do not have time to read them all and would like to have some algorithm to just show me the "key points" what to read. Anything like that for Linux out there?

With Bash I have to agree. Especially in case where I'm managing a fleet of servers together with a bunch of other people, I'm not going to change the default shell on every one of them and install my own .whateverrc file.

With the keyboard however I can disagree. Actually, the keyboard can have QWERTY written on the keycaps, but nothing stops you from configuring your system to use whatever layout you like. I for example wrote this post on a QWERTY keyboard using a Dvorak layout. The keycaps don't match with letters being written, but I don't care, because I'm not even looking at the keyboard.

Polish truckers are blocking Ukraine from getting cargo trucks across the Polish border, leaving everything from food to tourniquets to military pickup trucks stuck in Poland — in the middle of a war!

Are there any limits to the hardship we will impose on the warn torn Ukraine, while their soldiers are killed and their cities are bombed?

This must stop.

Some time ago I read some of Joe Hill's horror . In one novel there was a trope of using "real" during summoning souls of deceased ones. Firstly main characters thought it should be names they were given at birth, but it didn't work. It worked when they used their chosen nicknames. And one of them said their legal names were bad past they escaped and chosen names represented they current selves and life they chose for themselves.

I like it very much and I feel this clearly.
And I liked when someone here mentioned "legal names" instead of "real names" while discussing some mainstream social media stupid policies. For me legal name is only dumb label, some identifier in offices to handle formal aspects of life. If I am not attached emotionally to my documents' numbers or debit card's number, why I should be attached to stupid word someone else chosen to call me and added to database?

I need some Polish phrase for "legal name" which would carry the same meaning.

My favorite lesser-known tech tool: ack! search: https://beyondgrep.com/
-Goes through big directories in blazing fast time without indexing.
-Color coding for results.
-Runs on any OS with and no admin rights required
-Nice quality of life improvements (you didn’t want to search all the backups or .git/.svn directories, right?)
-I will never forget “Mars Attacks!”

etam,
@etam@im-in.space avatar

@zeke
My favorite is "ag". Quoting from https://github.com/ggreer/the_silver_searcher :

  • It is an order of magnitude faster than ack.
  • It ignores file patterns from your .gitignore and .hgignore.
  • If there are files in your source repo you don't want to search, just add their patterns to a .ignore file. (cough *.min.js cough)
  • The command name is 33% shorter than ack, and all keys are on the home row!

    What do people use in 2023 for managing dotfiles?

    I've done the whole "~/ is a git repo" thing for a few years now, it's mostly ok... but has a few annoying downsides. It is fairly easy to manage changes. However setting it up is kinda annoying and you can end up accidentally losing unstaged files in ~/ when using it 😅

    etam,
    @etam@im-in.space avatar

    @craftyguy
    I recently started using https://yadm.io/ . It seems quite easy and straightforward.

    Earlier I was maintaining a git repo, manually symlink files to it and keep each machine in a separate branch, but I found this to be too much hassle.
