Archeologists have puzzled for centuries over how the Great Pyramids were built by the ancient Egyptians, a civilization that hadn’t yet discovered white people.

ilgaz,

@maxleibman I just remembered the whole Cleopatra/Egypt/Netflix saga. Too early for PC filter, leaving it as is.

I don’t know how I got on these chodes’ radar, but it seems like as good a time as any to remind everyone that it is safe to assume that ANYONE asking for a fee in exchange for getting you a job is scammer.

Real recruiters are paid by the hiring firm. If they are pitching their fee as paying for a “boot camp” or “upskilling” you, you can rest assured that THAT is how they make their money, and they care fuck all whether you find a job or not.

ilgaz, (edited )

@maxleibman Even in Turkey it is plain illegal to ask money from job seekers. Only companies who looks for people have to pay.

I think they will claim that they manage LinkedIn profiles of people etc when they get into trouble.

About that: Actually I would be quite suspicious as a company when I see a perfectly polished, paid linkedin profile constantly sharing trivial certificates.
I think for a developer, GitHub profile URL and if Academic, .edu page preferably written with Libre office ;-)

ilgaz,

@jwz You sure know the Apple ad in the middle of Y2K panic right? I wonder if things have changed as there is BSD involved. Google bard says: Newer Apple silicon Macs: Macs released with Apple M1 chips and running macOS 13 Monterey or later already use a 64-bit Unix time format for core system functions. This eliminates the Y2K38 risk for these machines.

It’s hard not to say “AI” when everybody else does too, but technically calling it AI is buying into the marketing. There is no intelligence there, and it’s not going to become sentient. It’s just statistics, and the danger they pose is primarily through the false sense of skill or fitness for purpose that people ascribe to them.

ilgaz,

@Gargron As usual, rms is telling the truth and nobody listens ;-)

"I can't foretell the future, but it is important to realize that ChatGPT is not artificial intelligence. It has no intelligence; it doesn't know anything and doesn't understand anything. It plays games with words to make plausible-sounding English text, but any statements made in it are liable to be false. It can't avoid that because it doesn't know what the words mean."

At this point I'm wondering if Microsoft was playing 4D chess to buy out OpenAI... without having to buy out OpenAI lol

ilgaz,

@geerlingguy Microsoft buying something named "open" and closing it up would be PR disaster of the Century. Don't forget the general public not understanding how AI works and its capabilities and really afraid of it. They are actually afraid of BillG too.
While I was thinking about it, they did the unimaginable, acquired the people.
Hoping "good guys" wing of MS will handle this.

According to Reuters, citing sources, President Vladimir Putin is expected to run for a new term.

The sources suggest that Putin believes he needs to guide Russia through what is seen as one of the most perilous periods in the last six decades. While the decision is reportedly already made, advisors are said to be preparing for the upcoming election campaign.

The Israeli government has cut off food, water, and fuel to 2 million people inside Gaza as part of its campaign to stamp out Hamas terrorism. Collective punishment is not only contrary to international law, it is inhumane and illogical. It is what my community once endured in World War II, all because of the actions of others who happened to share our ethnicity. Have we learned nothing? How will this possibly help deescalate the violence rather than radicalize many more? It is madness.

On this fateful date in 2001, I woke up in a 22-story Marriott hotel right between the twin towers in NY. I had planned to linger till around 10 a.m. But a last-minute meeting made me leave at 8:15, just 30 minutes before the first plane struck. The hotel was destroyed. I was saved. But we can never forget those who perished and the heroic first responders who saved other lives.

ilgaz,

@waltmossberg I was on a metal/rock radio chat and someone just an hour later asked "How will they use this to take away our freedoms?"

Wanted to share something good…

My daughter’s back in school, which means I’m back in school (homework). She’s learning algebra. I took it in the 6th grade with 7th/8th graders. But I forgot most of it.

She was crying when we sat down. She didn’t understand any of it. First I had to learn it, then try to explain it differently. By the time we finished, she was smiling and racing through the problems. That felt really good.

ilgaz,

@markwyner You probably know but GPT-4 is a shameless mega liar when it comes to math. It tells false calculations and logic errors in a very convincing way.

Another person criticized me for promoting my Patreon. Let me put this into perspective. People spent $74.6 million to see the 2019 film Cats in theaters. At the current rate, it would take 34,158 years for my project to bring in as much money as Cats. I like to think Low Quality Facts provides at least as much entertainment value as Cats, a film which one critic described as "The worst thing to happen to cats since dogs".
In conclusion, here's my Patreon:
