The Difficulty of Caging Snakes...

ronanmcd, to random
@ronanmcd@mastodon.green avatar

Got a local political flyer in the door. All the usual dog whistles; no-go areas, war on motorists etc. For example, he wants to allow private vehicles use bus lanes. Consigning everyone to driving. I mean it's all really stupid stuff, but the overtones struck me.
He's running for local council but all policies are individualistic and against civic spirit. They are all "I'm alright" and anti progress.

incredibish,
@incredibish@mastodon.green avatar

@ronanmcd
When you say private vehicles do you mean cars or motorcycles? The two are quite different issues, with the one clogging up public transport and making bus lanes just another carriageway, while the other offers a low congestion way of effectively moving individuals around who cannot feasibly otherwise use public transport.

incredibish,
@incredibish@mastodon.green avatar

@ronanmcd
Thanks for the clarification. Bikes are allowed here, in Bristol, and it makes for a much easier journey without adversely impacting buses. Taxis too, actually, although they can cause congestion. Allowing cars in would seem to be eradicating all the viability of bus lanes.

Anyone else struggling to see any prospects for turning things around? I will keep on trying to do what I can. Of course. But 2024 is challenging.

Last year did a post about how I wasn’t motivated by hope but by . I now realise i got that wrong. Hope isn’t just fluffy “things will be alright”. Hope is some flicker of belief that you and others can change things; I did, actually, have “hope”. Less now, but will keep going.

No, there's no chance of stopping this train of events now; the motivation to sustain profit was stronger than the motivation to sustain our only habitable environment. Which is insane.
I've done the grief, and now I'm living in a sort of dim acceptance that what we thought was going to hit our grandchildren is already touching us.
I'm not as green as I could be, but I'm experiencing life in as honourable a relationship as I can craft for me and mine.

Do you have a blog at Wordpress.com? Congrats! You will soon be feeding all your content to an AI, unless you opt-out. Same with Tumblr! (Why I self-host, reason ) Source: https://www.404media.co/tumblr-and-wordpress-to-sell-users-data-to-train-ai-tools/ and many more

UPDATE: Seems it already happened. Content from 2014-2023 has already been shared. So your opt-out will just be honoured going forward. If and how already sent content will be handled by the receiving 3rd party after you opt-out remains a mystery

It would be naive to imagine permissions are always honoured. This appears to be more smoke than fire though, and perhaps it's being spun but WP itself offers this link: https://wordpress.com/read/feeds/25823/posts/5136056647

I do think that generating a track from existing songs to create a "new" Beatles track does create a Beatles song. Just a very boring one that probably wouldn't have made a b-side.

Artists do often have a certain style (at a point in time) which these statistical systems can reproduce to a degree. So yeah, the song is based on the artists' patterns and if done by the artists could be considered their work.

It just takes away everything from the work of artists we care about. There's no reflection on the real world, on lived experience, no social interaction or communication, nothing new to say about anything.

It's pretending as if the album by an artist you like that is kinda boring because it sounds like all the old ones is relevant work. It's the definition of cashing in on one's reputation with worthless content.

incredibish,
@incredibish@mastodon.green avatar

@tante I don't disagree with your uncharitable sentiments, but then again I am an old people, and a long time Beatles fan, and I am ready to drop shields this afternoon and go with the emotion - as indeed I did when I watched the making of mini-doc this morning. ;-)

The past two nights I wrote a "thread reader app" for BlueSky.

The protocol is absolutely insane.

There's no privacy. And I don't mean missing DMs.

All your posts are available through API endpoints. Without any authentication. By design.

The "invite-only" thing may have you think otherwise.

Here are my last 100 posts.

Mmm, nasty. That's why I post publicly all the time and don't rely on PMs even if it's vitally important to remain secure. There was a time when private existed, but we've gone full circle and now it's handwritten notes, manually encoded, physically passed on...

i had my (realising i needed to really act about climate) in Feb 2019 and have tried so many different things since. But right now, for the first time, I feel completely “spent”. Obviously hasn’t gone away; it’s more my own issues (mostly i think debilitating sense of guilt and hypocrisy). Have any of you ever had these points, and how did you work your way out again? Or anyone feeling this just now, too?

incredibish,
@incredibish@mastodon.green avatar

@pvonhellermannn Totally. I went through the "I must make a difference and save the planet"... then eventually realised it wasn't really catching on with the rest of the 'western world'. I've done the grief and then the rage and the hypocrisy. Now I look to enjoy the ride into the catastrophe while living as honourably as I can. I don't think the planet's in danger from us, excepting a few thousand other species extinctions we're involved in, but I think our part of the ride is almost finished.
