my european mind cannot comprehend this site fully

https://www.capitoltrades.com/

its like - oh great, someone's catalogued all the insider trading politicians are doing

except it's not for that reason?? it's to help guide your own investment decisions???

the uk version i guess is this sad collection of pdfs and some vague mumbling about blind trusts

https://www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/standards-and-financial-interests/parliamentary-commissioner-for-standards/registers-of-interests/register-of-members-financial-interests/

wild how we are both doing capitalism just as awfully but americans just don't give a fuck who knows

Prob a good time to re-share my piece on what I think is the singularity: not super smart AIs, but ones just dumb enough to do mediocre jobs badly reducing the signal to noise to the point everything on a computer is suspect: https://kim.town/Singularity

One of the worst parts about getting older is realising that people you once admired are actually complete muppets

kim,

@jonty do muppets even have footsteps or do their legs just kind of dangle in the air not touching the ground

appreciate all the trans people reporting on the . but really, i don't want reporting, i want the whole thing to be psychically crunched into a giant ball and banished from existence along with all the transphobes and never have to think about it again

can we get a crowdfunder going please

the irony of effective altruism is that probably by far the most cost effective thing to change the world is hiring hit men to go after billionaires

kim,
@kim@social.gfsc.studio avatar

not only would this have an immediate impact on wealth hoarding, it would put people off wanting to be billionares.

hard to think of anything else that would materially do so much for so little investment

it would also make a great tv show

kim,
@kim@social.gfsc.studio avatar

omg do it as a dexter inspired show about an effective altruist psychopathic cannibal who hunts billionares as the most ethical way to slake his thirst

call it "eat the rich"

please someone make this show

has anyone done a analysis on the impact of mass ?

seems reasonable to me that landlordism stops people putting down roots (and therefore making communal solutions harder), making their houses more eco-friendly (insulation / solar / heat pumps / energy efficient appliances etc), means they have to earn more and therefore ups consumption in general, etc? i bet rentier churn is awful for the environment, lots of skips and cheapest possible ikea furniture?

Since the word "learning" became part of my job title I get an unbelievable amount of unsolicited sales outreach for edtech products, L&D services etc, a lot of money in pretending to help folk learn it seems!

kim,
@kim@social.gfsc.studio avatar

@sue from what i understand, manchester city council will only hire people who live in inner city postcodes for the low paid jobs, but you can apply for the higher paid ones wherever you live (i.e. from suburbia). i can't think of a system more designed to engineer racial disparity that is absolutely reflected in their current diversity stats.

kim,
@kim@social.gfsc.studio avatar

@sue exactly. and tbh i think the whole thing is falling apart atm because rents are too high in the city, and they keep hiring people on 0.2 FTE jobs with no hope of promotion. i think CPD is dead as a concept tbh

if people want to do something really tangible to help people at the moment... honestly the best thing you can do is just reach out to your trans friends. invite us to the pub or for dinner, or anything that lets us forget about the state of things for a bit.

i've been on HRT for a year this week, it's been one of the most socially isolating years of my life. basically every trans person i know is really not ok on multiple fronts. relationship breakdowns are everwhere.

kim,
@kim@social.gfsc.studio avatar

every transperson experiences transphobia differently but as a transfemme its wild living in this liminal space where it feels like you don't have access to either male or female spaces and privilage.

as a participant said in @gfsc studio zine on trans inclusion, “the best [experience] I’ve had is mediocre”. i agree, it would be a vast improvement to go back to a place where trans issues were niche politics again and we could just get on with it. bleurgh.

what git jargon do you find confusing? thinking of writing a blog post that explains some of git's weirder terminology: "detached HEAD state”, "fast-forward", "index/staging area/staged", “ahead of 'origin/main' by 1 commit”, etc

(really only looking for terms that you personally find confusing, not terms that you think someone else might be confused about)

kim,
@kim@social.gfsc.studio avatar

@b0rk i have accepted what a pull request is now but i still find it a really unintuitive term - who is pulling what where?

You know why the fascists win? Because they get the left to constantly fight amongst ourselves over purity tests. You're not socialist enough, or anarchist enough, or anti-racist enough or using the exact correct language when being a LGBTQ+ ally. It's why we lose, and why our spaces fall apart, why the real enemy runs rampant and destroys our world.

I'm so sick of seeing it, over and over again. Sigh...

kim,
@kim@social.gfsc.studio avatar

@Tweetfiction had a few chats with people recently where i've tried to impress that people who call you names and bully you are not your ally no matter what side you think they're on and its depressing af

    People really really don't like it when you criticize Mastodon's user experience.

    kim,
    @kim@social.gfsc.studio avatar

    @ninavizz @ben im not sure this is true as much as its totally unclear how to contribute things if they're not in a pull request on github which is obviously a very coder brain and culture thing to do

    kim,
    @kim@social.gfsc.studio avatar

    @ninavizz totally fair. i guess im talking about something a bit different here which is that if you're a programmer and there's a bug in some FLOSS you are empowered to clone the source code and fix it and open a PR, this is all using skills you have. for a designer this process just don't exist in the same way and it's fundamentally more subjective than "code broke". i don't have too much insight into how big FLOSS projects finance and manage themselves big picture!!
