If anyone took video clips of my #emfcamp live coding performance on Saturday night I'd be curious to see them!

m0rpk,
@m0rpk@mastodon.radio avatar

@yaxu Ah - I refrained because I thought it was marked as no photography on the schedule. It was an awesome set though.

I also saw your talk and set in 2022. I love how you incorporated some of the traditional patterns you spoke about in 2022 into your 2024 live performance 😍

Looking for help from #JavaScript and / or Apple Mac people.

I have before me an old MacBook Pro running #MacOS 10.13.6. It can't be upgraded because of hardware constraints.

No browser on this device will render the #emfcamp schedule here: https://www.emfcamp.org/schedule/2024

I see JS console errors like "TypeError: Object.groupBy is not a function"

I've tried #Chrome, #Firefox, and #Safari.

Is it possible a script on that page relies on an OS feature this machine lacks?

The new Outlook client flat out refuses to run if there is no internet connection. This is annoying when on a train and wanting to extract some information from an email received yesterday 🤬

@Dragon Yes, it feels a lot more like a thin web app than a rich desktop client.

This is a corporate machine so I don’t get to choose my mail client.

Horrified by the prospect of Suella Braverman's impending dismissal as Home Secretary.

Not because I like her but because the trajectory for the past 20 years has been a downward spiral.

So who will they install as Home Secretary next?

Dracula?

Hitler?

Kemi Badenoch?

m0rpk,
@m0rpk@mastodon.radio avatar

@cstross At some point one has to ask whether it’s the politicians leading the Home Office to be ever more bigoted and authoritarian or the other way round.

Abolish the Home Office, I reckon. Break it up. Destroy the whole institution and find better ways to deliver its myriad functions.

I really don't know why I bother writing to my MP. The only reply I ever get is a Labour press release on whatever topic I've contacted him about.

m0rpk,
@m0rpk@mastodon.radio avatar

@fkamiah17 @glynmoody MPs don’t generally even see your first letter on a subject. Their staff respond from file. If you write a second time, and point out anything in your first letter that their reply didn’t answer, you sometimes get a more individual response.

30 years ago, the Maastricht Treaty entered into force.

This Treaty established the European Union as we know it today, increasing cooperation between EU countries and creating EU citizenship.

EU citizens have the right to vote and stand as a candidate in 🇪🇺 and local elections in their country of residence.

As we look ahead to the 2024 European elections, today we remember how far we have come.

This is the history of democracy in action.

Geo-politics comes to a #cloud near you.

#Amazon announces #AWS European Sovereign Cloud.

"designed to help public sector organizations and customers in highly regulated industries meet their evolving sovereignty needs...AWS European Sovereign Cloud to be separate and independent from our existing Regions, with infrastructure located wholly within the European Union (EU)"

#geopolitics #data

https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/security/aws-digital-sovereignty-pledge-announcing-a-new-independent-sovereign-cloud-in-europe/

m0rpk,
@m0rpk@mastodon.radio avatar

@wildebees @1br0wn I don’t understand why customers who are sensitive to jurisdiction think the physical location of a data centre mitigates the nationality of the company running it.

If FISA authorised the NSA to reach into Amazon’s data centres, would the fact that those computers are located outside the USA have any impact?

m0rpk,
@m0rpk@mastodon.radio avatar

@wildebees @1br0wn My feeling is that “data sovereignty” is a euphemism for protectionism. Countries want Amazon et al to invest in local infrastructure and jobs.

LastPass Requires Users to Update Master Password to at Least 12 Characters

The move comes amid reports of hackers cracking the master passwords for LastPass vaults stolen in a 2022 hack. Longer passwords have been required since 2018, but not for legacy users.

Senior programmers: What makes a senior programmer? I’m especially interested in the team context. What are the things a senior dev brings to the table?

m0rpk,
@m0rpk@mastodon.radio avatar

@janl @Patricia @vaurora In my view the most important deliverable of a senior developer is more senior developers.

In other words, mentoring others, helping them gain experience, etc. is how an engineer working at a senior level multiplies their impact within an organisation.

It’s no longer about writing code yourself - it’s more about ensuring great code gets written. If that makes sense?

Privacy and security are related but separated concepts.

While privacy can often enhance security and security can enhance privacy, something can be 100% secure but be 100% not private, and vice versa.

Remain cautious about correlations between the twos.

@m0rpk@mastodon.radio avatar

@Em0nM4stodon Indeed. As illustrated by the statement, “Facebook keeps your family photos secure.”

@Edent Surprised not to see ‘basic spelling and grammar mistakes’ on your list of errors. Every other CV I see is littered with them. Often while claiming the candidate has ‘excellent attention to detail’ and ‘strong written communication skills.’ Perhaps more senior folks are more likely to have learned to enlist proofreaders?

m0rpk,
@m0rpk@mastodon.radio avatar

@Edent Do you not think it matters though? I’m reading a CV imagining it’s representative of the quality of written work they’re likely to deliver.
