Now that I occasionally hold lectures at university, I notice again how ridiculously long they are. No-one (students or lecturer) can keep concentration for 90 minutes.

@kellogh people love an oversimplified story. If you can't break a complex topic down into 30-second soundbites, no-one's going to listen.

Perspective: the biggest carbon capture plant in the world sequesters 1 millionth of our annual emissions. We would have to build a million of these plants to not_increase the CO2 level. And we need to decrease the CO2 level.

Carbon capture is a scam.

@maltimore@social.tchncs.de avatar

@rysiek @szakib
AFAIK, Iceland is also selling its "green energy" certificates, which means that technically, the electricity that powers these plants is from fossil fuels. And therefore, at a systemic level, these plants are currently emitting much more CO2 than they capture.

I'm sorry but I have to quickly let out some disappointment with . Why do the devs decide to implement huge new features like an entirely new Chat (Matrix), when the basic mail features don't even work? For instance, the search. Search something with the full search (Ctrl-K), 0 results. Search for the same thing with "quicksearch" (Ctrl-Shift-K)? Works.
The calendar? Processing event invites that are more complex than the absolute simplest? Fails more often than not.

@isagalaev@mastodon.social avatar

I'm back! Borked my laptop by upgrading to the recent 24.04 beta. Looks like the upgrade process removed/disabled drivers, and for a while I was left with looking at a plain non-GUI shell, which required an actual real-life magnifying glass, because of my HiDPI display!

Now it's operational again with built-in drivers, but I still want to figure out how to bring the AMD 3-rd part drivers back and restore OpenCL support.

maltimore,
@maltimore@social.tchncs.de avatar

@isagalaev my take-away from this is that 2024 won't be the year of Linux on the desktop either 😅

So, my favorite pub no longer serves any snacks that are without animal cruelty.

They used to have "olives & feta" that could be ordered without the feta; apparently they now buy the olives with the animal cruelty pre-mixed in.

maltimore,
@maltimore@social.tchncs.de avatar

@janneke that really sucks. I thought there was a trend all over (western) Europe that more vegan things are on the menu instead of less. I guess either that's wrong or this is an unfortunate outlier.

nice! When I climbed a high mountain for the first time, I was similarly impressed! I grew up in the far north of Germany where the highest mounts is like 5 meters. I had no idea that when you get really high, you're often above the clouds. What a nice surprise it was!

i think GPT-5 will be released soon, if OpenAI plans to maintain their dominance. We're starting to see open & proprietary models that rival or beat the performance of GPT-4. Thus far OpenAI has maintained their moat by simply having far superior models, so there's a ticking clock for releasing a big improvement. I worry that it'll be released too soon, before proper QA and safety have been done

maltimore,
@maltimore@social.tchncs.de avatar

@kellogh
i haven't been following the developments in LLMs, could you give me the names of a few models that rival the performance of GPT-4? (I'm interested mostly in open but I guess the best ones will still be proprietary?)

What do y'all use if you quickly want to translate a word to another language?

I mostly use leo.org, translate.google.com, chatGPT or deepl.com, but what I would really like is (of course) an open source service without tracking. I don't want to install a separate app, I want a website.

I saw that there is an open source dataset of dictionaries (), but there's no webinterface for this?

A mastodon feature I'd like to have is to add a private note (only visible to myself) about why I blocked/muted someone.
With some profiles it is obvious but sometimes you really only see someone's true assholery shining through in a specific toot.

This morning, out of nowhere, I decided enough is enough. Python existed for over 30 years, so the following issue just shouldn't exist anymore:

>>> 0.1 + 0.2 == 0.3
False

So I after people tried to convince me of julia for many years because it supposedly handles numbers much better, I finally tried it.

julia> 0.1 + 0.2 == 0.3
false

Okay then.

  • A redesigned Settings GUI
  • Improved Android controls, can place nodes with single tap
  • Improved antialiasing filters
