for the fediverse to live up to its potential, you do have to report accts that violate rules. when you hit block you have the option of sending a report to the user’s admins, which is what it takes to remove abusive accts.

if someone is invoking systems of oppression in their posts or replies, it’s not just words, it’s harm that causes real stress, anxiety, ptsd etc, all of which are physically unhealthy and/or change a person’s ability to express themselves or seek and find community here

“The scientists’ big finding is that forests and buildings along the coast have skewed radar maps, presenting planners with inaccurate elevation data. Lidar showed coastlines often lower than first realized. This has two important implications: the same amount of sea level rise will be able to reach much farther inland, and it’s going to happen a lot sooner than expected.”

reminder that if Netanyahu & the US gets away with this in #Gaza — targeting journalists, targeting hospitals and schools and refugee camps, starving millions of children, mass murder on the scale of tens of thousands, shutting down press, internet and information, killing humanitarian workers, preventing crucial aid convoy, firing on people receiving aid, and planning resettlement of regions based on ethnic identity — these methods will be normalized & advanced by other western nations & govts

the reason we couldn’t be honest about Covid and act accordingly is that would have meant we needed to take care of poor or vulnerable people and there is a bipartisan embargo on that

the best thing masto can do right now, imo, is to prioritize features & support for organizing communities. This is why facebook has society in its jaws, people are able to easily create, find, and post in any number of communities they overlap with.

if mastodon or an adjacent fediverse platform can better facilitate self-organizing communities, they will win all the spoils and then some

listening to these two interviews the difference you hear between the Israeli and the Palestinian is that the Israeli is absolutely shocked to have her home destroyed and the Palestinian is exhausted from decades of it. Both are living horrific tragedies right now but that distinction feels pretty important - she even says at some point “I’m used to hearing shelling in Gaza, but usually we are safe here on the Israeli side of the blockade” 😔

thinking about rebuilding our public squares in a hybrid digital age

  1. encourage public entities to share public info on public channels, not private platforms

  2. embrace sharing in real life, use email, snail mail, private messenger, radio, newspaper, public forum, neighborhood scale gathering

  3. create and use nonprofit and publicly owned social sharing platforms, but prioritize real life sharing when possible

I think of antisemitism as prejudice specifically against Jewish human beings. when I see the term weaponized to shield a madman like Netanyahu from criticism, or to dehumanize Palestinians, or to protect ahistorical takes that justify ethnic cleansing perpetrated by the state of Israel, I have to call bullshit. it is not antisemitic to criticize Israel, empathize with Palestinians, or share history

Between October and the beginning of March, the U.S. approved more than 100 military sales to Israel, but publicly disclosed only two sales.

An undisclosed amount of weapons was also transferred from U.S. military stockpiles already stored in Israel, for which there is no public record or inventory.

We pay for much of this with our taxes, but like most US military spending, we cannot actually look up what it is we ourselves are paying for

"Biden is looking to lift virtually all the meaningful restrictions on the stockpile and the transfer of its arms to Israel, with plans to remove limitations to obsolete or surplus weapons, waive an annual spending cap on replenishing the stockpile, remove weapon-specific restrictions, and curtail congressional oversight. All of the changes in the Biden budget plan would be permanent, except for lifting the spending cap, which is limited to the 2024 fiscal year."

every time US right wingers radicalize into convoys etc they get practice organizing.

we focus on how dumb or maybe scary their conspiracy driven gatherings are but the reality is that they are getting more and more vital practice with assembling, forming relationships and alliances, and connecting with needed resources — really helpful stuff for building power

When asked why he withdrew campaign support for Biden, Khan says it's simple: "ethnic cleansing is where I get off the bus, right?"

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

the problem with celebrating girl bosses is at the end of the day you are celebrating bosses. society oriented around hierarchy is not feminist because it requires inequality.

let's think about this! the problem with patriarchy is not that some humans are born with dicks. the problem is structuring society around the unequal distribution of power. placing women within that architecture doesn't level it. but re-orienting around lateral movement building & collective organizing can! imo!
