my biggest complaint about AI is we didn’t ask for it. zero popular movements took to the streets to demand AI. no one sat around kitchen tables lamenting how hard life is without AI.

what people want is health care, housing, climate change solutions, etc We sit around kitchen tables wondering how to pay for college, get loved ones the psych and addiction support they need, or help the people on our streets who need homes

AI should be like the James Webb telescope. put a team together and we will decide if your proposal is of sufficient social value to warrant use of the machine, otherwise sorry you can pay an illustrator a living wage to make art for the story

I know this is really obvious to most of us but as someone who witnessed the rampant racism, sexism, anti-gayness etc of even the 80s and 90s, it’s pretty clear that the current culture war is just a response to us emerging from those patterns! watch any movie from 1990 or around there and it will blow your mind what was common & totally acceptable. We are waking up from a very deep sleep, and some folks can’t handle it

we are far from any kind of American promised land here but what I notice about our current era is at some point (2008?), we crossed a kind of threshold with what passes as socially acceptable. you are just more likely to get called out for indulging in systems of oppression in ways that did not happen 20-40 years ago. MAGA just means they want to go back behind that threshold and keep playing pretend. it just felt so good for them when white men were the exalted ones but no one ever said it

thinking about rebuilding our public squares in a hybrid digital age

  1. encourage public entities to share public info on public channels, not private platforms

  2. embrace sharing in real life, use email, snail mail, private messenger, radio, newspaper, public forum, neighborhood scale gathering

  3. create and use nonprofit and publicly owned social sharing platforms, but prioritize real life sharing when possible

I think a lot of people are hungry for real life community and don't really want to live on facebook, but we've ended up funneling vast amounts of human llfe into that one website! how do we start inviting people back to real life? and empowering people to choose online spaces that align with their values?

our friends visited and stayed with us and one had a cold/stuffy nose. so they both took covid tests (repeatedly negative) and masked in shared indoor spaces and in the car with us the whole time. they decided to do this on their own, stuck to it consistently, and didn’t complain about it. this is the post covid public health revolution I signed up for

FYI i learned that if you or someone you know does not have health insurance for any reason, you CAN still get a free covid vaccine. you go to Vaccines.gov and search your current zip code and look for the "Bridge Access Program" as you search. there should be at least one location in your area set up with the free covid vax program,

the wto protests were a turning point for me as a college student, that's when i learned that the news media can lie, and that militarized police are the ones who overwhelmingly initiate fear and perpetrate the violence accredited to protestors on the evening news. i guess a new generation of college students is learning about this now, probably the most important thing they'll learn on their campuses in 4 years tbh

yesterday the US & Europe contributed aircraft and firepower (Navy and Air Force) to “help” shoot down Iranian missiles and drones — you know in addition to the massive “iron dome” defense system that we pay for.

the iron dome and all of our foreign military capacity is just an incredible feat of engineering, billions of dollars and decades of intensive manufacturing, congressional policy support, bipartisan agreements, and full media capitulation. IMAGINE if we directed that level of resource coordination to a Green New Deal, healthcare for all Americans, or humane migration policy & system, imagine what we are quite literally capable of accomplishing!

just imagine if every time you turned on the tv or saw a headline it was a charismatic person or pundit explaining how the Green New Deal would improve quality of life for everyone while boosting a new kind of economy. Imagine if every single congressperson had to, at minimum, agree that GND was our single largest spending priority and we don’t even question that in public, imagine if instead of an Iron Dome over Israel we constructed an Iron Roam system of high speed trains in the US

I asked my small biz customers to pay by check or e-check and many actually have! I have to invoice them separately so it’s tedious but the real ones are down. well, the real ones plus the lady from Texas who told me she was happy to start getting in the habit of paying for things by check due to the 15 minute city people eventually using credit cards to shut down commerce from longer distances 🤗

I continue to believe that the combination of a poorly (or non) regulated air bnb boom, the naked profiteering of real estate agents & associations, corporate ownership of housing as investment, tax regs that favor home owners over renters, and capital tied up in boomer’s assets are all contributing to a situation we can’t build our way out of

living in a tiny town during all this has been so instructive because it’s really obvious that we lost 10-20 houses to Airbnb right at the same time 10-20 families with kids stopped being able to find or afford houses. Meanwhile the real estate agents encourage folks to price houses at truly astronomical prices and in at least one case, entered into a relationship with a wealthy california investor to show houses to him first so he could snatch up lucrative rural alaska rentals
