I grew up in #Canada, but it just didn't work out. I've been in the #Netherlands since 2018, and sometime in 2024, we plan to apply for citizenship.

Maybe we know each other from #LiveJournal some #Vancouver or #Toronto events. I've done #Music #Journalism, #Photography and #FineArts and accidentally "fell into" #IT, and then further into Financial IT.

My 10 yo did a bit of cosplay at and he was nervous about how his C3PO costume was going to be received. He said he thought it was too "janky" for the photoshoot we were headed to.

As we rounded the corner by the Courtland (nee Sheraton) one guy commented on how cool the costume looked. That helped buoy the kid.

When we arrived, the 501st were fist-bumping him, ribbons were offered.

So I just posted to say thanks.

It’s weird to me when people frame calls for bike-friendly infrastructure as in conflict with disability accommodation. Make a city good for biking requires lots of smooth curbless bike paths that are perfect for mobility scooters, much better than trying to use your scooter on the road or the sidewalk. I see people zipping around on their mobility scooters everywhere in Amsterdam. They also have these tiny little cars for people with disabilities that are allowed to use all bike infrastructure

xinit,
@xinit@mastodon.coffee avatar

@mekkaokereke @vaurora I think the secret is that many of the people with the “what about the disabled” line aren’t disabled and don’t care what happens to the disabled.

They’re using them as a straw man “gotcha” for the “leftist elite cyclists” who likely DO care about people who need accommodations.

They don’t want more accommodations for the disabled, the poor, the pedestrians.

UK MP Angela Eagle, who was a joint winner of the 1976 British Girls' Under-18 chess championship, said: "There is no physical advantage in chess unless you believe men are inherently more able to play than women -- I spent my chess career being told women's brains were smaller than men's and we shouldn't even be playing." She added: "This ban is ridiculous and offensive to women."

    Yes, perfectly well.

    I'm not angry about this, contrary to what it may sound like: I'm amused. Perhaps I'm easily amused.

    Thing is, it's a pretty normal thing - and it's happening a bit more now given recent topic of discussion here - for me to wind up having conversations with people about the value of anonymity or pseudonymity, in which people volunteer the opinion directly to me, usually in agreement with me, that anonymous commenters are not all bad, or that there's some value to allowing anonymous online comments because of some example... out there (waves hands airily) somewhere.

    To me. They say this directly to me. While I am standing directly in front of them, as it were, virtually, using a pseudonym.

    You know the ID in my wallet does not actually say "Siderea, Sibylla Bostoniensis", right? My professional license does not say "Siderea, Sibylla Bostoniensis, LMHC". That is not what I put at the top of my IRS 1040. It's not what my patients call me.

    Framing centralized control of who gets to browse the Internet as "safe for users" is playing the age old card of authoritarianism being in the interest of the "weak and feeble-minded".

    There will be no civil engagement with proposals of domination and coercion.
