The Cosmic Machine: The Science That Runs Our Universe and the Story Behind It by Scott Bembenek
Energy, Entropy, Atoms, and Quantum Mechanics form the very foundation of our universe. But how do they govern the world we live in? What was the difficult path to their discovery? Who were the key players that struggled to shape our current understanding?
The Elements We Live By
How Iron Helps Us Breathe, Potassium Lets Us See, and Other Surprising Superpowers of the Periodic Table by Anja Røyne
We all know that we depend on elements for survival - from oxygen in the air we breathe to carbon in the molecular structures of all living things. But we seldom appreciate how, say, phosphorus holds our DNA together or how potassium powers our optic nerves enabling us to see.
#ScienceDirect and #Elsevier clearly didn't review this #chemistry paper about #batteries. The intro starts with "Certainly, here is a possible introduction for your topic:".
This lack of oversight erodes #trust in #science. The paper needs to be retracted and the authors sanctioned immediately.
Happy birthday to chemist William Henry Perkin (1838-1907)! This #lino print ‘William Henry Perkin Discovers Mauve’ is about how the British chemist & entrepreneur made the serendipitous discovery of the 1st synthetic organic dye: mauveine.
Perkins entered the Royal College of Chemistry in London in 1853 when he was only 15, studying with August Wilhelm von Hofmann. 🧵1/n #linocut#printmaking#sciart#chemistry#syntheticChemistry#dye#histstm#chemist#FashionHistory#histchem#MastoArt
Do you want to actively support the fight for #climate and environmental justice in Canada?
#Research for the Front Lines is expanding our network and we’re particularly looking for people with backgrounds in applied science or analytical testing of environmental pollutants who can volunteer some labour to enhance the support we provide to #Indigenous Land Defenders and other frontline folks.

Oh that moment whenever someone says "Alcohol is no solution" I feel how my innerself is trembling until a l hear screaming myself: "But alcohol is a solution".
#OTD 1869. Dmitri Mendeleev presents the first periodic table to the Russian Chemical Society.
After becoming a teacher in 1867, Mendeleev wrote Principles of Chemistry (1868-70), which became the definitive textbook of its time. This is when he made his most important discovery. As he attempted to classify the elements according to their chemical properties, he noticed patterns that led him to postulate his periodic table. via @wikipedia

Polymer nano- and microparticles can precipitate together with calcium carbonate, reducing human intake
The FDA "announced the removal of the endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (#PFAS) from food packaging.
Issued on February 28, 2024, "this means the major source of dietary exposure to PFAS from food packaging like fast-food wrappers, microwave popcorn bags, take-out paperboard containers, and pet food bags is being eliminated," the FDA said in a statement."
